I started using Lactaid milk after developing lactose problems. I just took a good look at the nutritional information today and was shocked to see that it has 12 g of sugar per serving.
So far no problem but I was told not to eat anything with more than 6 g of sugar per serving in order to avoid dumping.
Any thoughts on this?

That's a good question...I have had the same question about juice. No dumping for me. They gave it to me in the hospital...not diluted...and I have been drinking small amounts throughout the day with water.
I will be interested in the other replies.

DANG!!! That's a lot of sugar! YIKES--I don't know if I could do that. I've been wondering if I've got lactose problems, so I was seriously considering switching to Lactaid. I know some people on here have another brand of milk that has some kind of enzymes or something. I hope that they'll chime in as I think this is another important topic for us all.
Thanks for bring this up.

I am 2 yrs out and still cant do dairy cause its gives me very painful gas since surgery. I use Soy, its usually bout 6 g sugar per 8 ozs, I only use 4 ozs a day in my mornin protein coffee tho. You can get it with less sugar though!

I will have to check out labels when I am at the store later today. That seems very surprising to me that there is so much sugar in a lactaid free product. There are so many varieties out there that we should be able to find one that works. I do know that soy milk has a lot of carbs in it compared to regular cows milk but I will read all the labels thoroughly and let you all know what I find.

The reason that we become lactose intolerant is because we no longer have the stomach acids to break down the lactose. For instance, you can probably eat yogurt (it's a milk product) because the cultures in the yogurt breaks down the lactose for you. Milk naturally has sugar and that is where the 12g comes from. That is for a full cup of milk though. I dump from too much sugar, so I keep my Lactaid milk consumption down to about a half cup. I use it for blending my shakes, so I'll use water for the balance.
The only way that you can avoid lactose and milk sugar is to drink something like Carb Countdown.
Hope that this helps you!

So I did my research at the store this morning and I found that the only milk there that didn't have at least 12g of sugar was the soymilk. It had only 1g of sugar and 4g of carbs which are both much lower than even fat free lactose free milk brands. It has anywhere from 0g of fat for the fat free to 4g of fat for the whole milk. I didn't see the carb countdown milk which I was looking for. I guess they don't carry it at that particular market. There are also those who have problems with soy so I would just do the research if I were you by reading the labels and go with one that doesn't give you any problems.

I had many problems with milk for the first few (or 6 even) months after surgery. I had no problems with the lactaid but I never had a full cup at one time. Soy milk taste horrible to me but I know others who love it. I think you will be OK with the lactaid, just dont drink 8oz at 1 time! LOL
