action-smiley-065.gif Hi everyone,

I am in the research stage of this process. I know a few people who have had bypass or lap band. The lap and one bypass said their hair fell out quickly. A friend who just had the surgery about 8 weeks ago said she hasn't had a problem. How has it been for most of you? Also, if it fell out, did it grow back?

Biotin supplementation has really helped me with hair loss and weaker fingernails. My hair loss was not major, and it started around 6 months. It's finer now than it used to be, but I have plenty of it.

I lost alot of my hair I can pull up the front and u can see my scalp good. But I never made sure to get in protein until the 5dpt. Now i have baby hairs poppin out everywhere yea. I have always taken biotin and all but w/o protein its going to fall out to some degree!

I ate all of my protein in the beginning, but the hair loss is something that is very normal. I lost buckets of it around four months post op and it lasted for about a month. Then it stopped and the new hair that grew in was really fine. I still have a super thin spot (won't call it a bald spot!) near my crown, but I'd take having a healthy body over having a healthy head of hair ANY day!

I haven't had a problem and will be four months out on December first. I take Biotin and am a stickler for getting in my protein and supplements. Guess that works for me at least for now.

I lost hair also from about month 3 - month 9. I used Nioxin shampoo and really got my protein in. The protein also makes your nails grow like crazy. Hair los is normal and it returns to normal and it's one of the things we endure when we choose this process. I agree with Kim though....I few months of thinner hair is NOTHING compared to having a healthy energized body. I wouldn't make or break my decision on hair loss!

Hope that helps!

Mine is still falling out at just over a year out. It hasn't been major, just more in the brush and in the shower drain. What has me confused is that what is growing back in is growing in curly. I've always had poker straight hair and these curls are kinda fun!
It's also gone through dry stages. To the point where I've had to use a leave in conditioner. Hmmmm, maybe upping my fat intake? I do take biotin also which I really believe has helped me not lose too much.
Trust me its a minor pain in the butt and you barely even take note of it because you are too busy living a healthier more active life.
Oh yeah, before I forget..........Welcome to the neighborhood!!

I would like to thank everyone for your input. This is a wonderful website! Such nice people willing to share so much with others. I am amazed by the success stories I have read and am even more amazed by the before and after pics. No wonder people call it their birthday because so many look so different with the weight gone. My congratutions to everyone!

Thank you for welcoming me to the neighborhood even though I am just researching right now. Like most of you, I have tried so many diets and gone through so much money in the quest to lose. I was thin until I had children but think it was because I was smoking then. Once the cigarettes were gone, the food began. Just traded one addiction for another. Some diets have worked but once off them the weight comes right back on which is why I am considering the bypass.

Congratulations to all of you beautiful people and thank you again for sharing! angel-smiley-002.gif

Well Cyn I was just researching the surgery too when I joined the Hood and I give the info and support and friendships found here a lot of credit for my success so far. Look through the library, and ask as many questions as you need to to help you make your decision. Best of luck to you :)

I lost some hair at the 6 month point and it really upset me. I use to wear my hair longer and having worked with breast cancer patients in my younger years remembered my advice to them was to cut their hair shorter so people would not notice as much. So that is what I did and I have never grown it out again. I get compliments on my hair all the time. Yes it is thinner but well worth it. I would not let hair loss stop me from the surgery. Just be prepared to know that some of us have it, not all experience it. I would rather have less hair then all the weight I had before!

I lost buckets and buckets of hair sad0049.gif ....ok so maybe I exaggerated a bit...lol..but I did lose ALOT about 6-8 months out...funny story relating to this..

Background:I had tons of hair (not long; short but lots & lots of it) when I had surgery instead of flowers my aunt had bought me the line of Nioxin products...(that was almost 5 yrs ago) and I am still using them...

STORY:I used it faithfully and then 1 day I was running my fingers thru my hair and I started getting handfuls of hair...I MEAN HANDFULS and this went on for a couple of days and then it got to the point that while I was sitting on "the throne" I was innocently running fingers thru my hair again and AGAIN handfuls...so I started counting them (ok, so I've a lil' fascination with #s) anyhoo...when I got to about oh, I think it was 300 or 500 or some ungodly # I FREAKED....I thought omg I'm gonna be bald or at least half bald!!!! So I called a friend from my wls support group and she quickly reassured me that it was normal and that maybe I needed to add biotin to my daily regime. I was very conscious about my protein, my supplements, using my Nioxin, and just after that I was told to try the biotin...after about a yr or so my hair got back to it's normal amount. To this day I STILL take all my supplements, biotin included, use my Nioxin and try to get the protein in each day. Last month I went to hairdresser for trim and she commented on how healthy my hair was and how much it had changed over the past 3-4yrs...So thank God for biotin and Nioxin...both great for my hair! IN FACT THOSE OF YOU who may be a lil self conscious about your "bald" spots I highly reccommend trying Nioxin Shampoo, Conditioner, and styling products...pricey, but you are worth it...and remember a woman's hair is her "crown".... angel-smiley-002.gif

And just as everyone else has stated HAIR LOSS would not have been a deciding factor for me as far as wls is/was concernrecommended. It is a tiny price to pay to be healthier. Plus, the anesthesia can also make your hair fall out...so I say do not let this be your determining factor...it will grow back and many times even healthier! Let us know your decision... action-smiley-065.gif

Hi Amelia! Counting hairs...yikes! I tried the Nioxin products as a preventative measure and didn't have any success. After reading your post, it's making me think that it might just improve what I have. Thanks for posting!
