I'm 5 1/2 weeks out from lapband surgery. Will get first fill on Tuesday. Right now there is no restriction. I've been able to manage the hunger by eating heavy protiens only - chicken and cheese mainly. My gut is not happy about this. Constipation under control only with laxitives (per MD). Now I've become a gas factory. Gas-X helps, but I can't be taking that all the time. I know I'm drinking enough water and getting enough exercise. I'm not using straws, not drinking anything carbonated.
I got treated for the H-pylori bacteria before surgery, but took probiotics at the same time to try and replace the good bacteria. I don't know if that could be part of the problem.
Is there anything nutritionally or otherwise I could do or not do that might help with the gas problem?
Thanks!

Okay...gross talk time! I'm the Queen of All Things Gassy. I managed/figured out what my issue was a couple of years ago. Basically, if things are too soft inside due to laxatives, you'll get that rot gut thing happening. Too soft = bad. If it were me, I'd ask my doctor if I could reduce my laxatives a wee bit. Personally, I take a Senna pill every day. I was taking Senecot-S and it was too much. Only when really necessary do I take a stool softener.
Now the other thing that I learned is that if I get too much fat, I get really gassy. Farm raised salmon was horrid to my gut! I made the switch to wild salmon and all was well. Deep fried anything forces me to sleep alone!
Hope that his helps a little!

I eat chewable papaya enzymes to help digest the food. You can find it at most large drugstores (Wal Mart/Walgreens) and even some grocery stores carry it. Health food stores will have it for sure. When I eat a heavy meal, I eat a few of those, and it really works fast. It helps me feel better, but I'm not sure if it gets rid of gas. Maybe just reduces it.

The Papaya enzymes work for me too...also there's 1 that is very helpful for protein digestion...amylase (sp) or protease (sp)...anyhoo, it's the 1 found in pineapple...if you go to a health food store or herb shop they should be able to help you with the correct enzyme...this should help... Oh, and I think it's "Fennel seed" (yes, in spice rack) that helps with gas...just chew a few of the seeds and swallow (tastes kinda like balck licorice to me...but seems to work when I remember to do this)...
And when all else fails try Phazyme...not natural but really helps if it's stuck in your shoulder or side or where ever... I had NO idea my body could store so much gas in so many different places until I had wls...lol! my hubby says he can rub me anywhere (shoulder, neck, hip, etc..) and I burp...been like this since the day of surgery...came out of surgery and recovery needing to burp and hurting really bad from the gas....so bad my mom and hubby and others were taking turns "patting/rubbing" my back to help me release it! LOL! Reading this post reminded me of this...lol!!!

I had lap band surgery a little over two years ago.
"Gas" is something we lapbanders suffer for the first couple of months. I was reading a post one day that nearly got me fired from my job. Just kidding! The poster said that she had gas so bad that she almost blew herself through the wall!
Let me tell you, it sure feels like we could blow ourselves through the wall! We could end the oil crisis with the amount of gas we have the first couple of months.
Seriously, it will subside after 4 - 6 months.
For now, happy tootin'.

Has anyone heard about Julianne Kennedy’ newsletter reports. We all know a lot of people want to loss weight faster. So they wan to undergo some surgery called Gastric Bypass Surgery. Well I want to share this site that has a lot of information about the said issue:

I take Gas-X everyday and my doc wants me on probiotics every day as well as I get a bacterial overgrowth that makes everything worse. If taking a GasX everyday is the answer, it is an easy one. I know that it is one more pill to swallow, but to me, that seems easy!

I really like the Papaya enzymes too, but I'd take Gas-X if it will make the gas go away. I'm also really into trying to eat so that I am not making the gas a major issue, however, I KNOW that too much splenda causes gas, but that doesn't stop me from drinking Crystal Lite all day...

Boy am I glad that this topic got brought back up. All of the lovely hormones going through my body combined with WLS have me feeling like a newly post-op patient again. I was curled up last night in a ball until I remembered being post-op and being told to walk, walk , walk. So I popped in a DVD and started going. It helped a bit but it sure was a long night. I am going to have to go try the papaya pills. I actually burp first thing in the morning when I haven't drank or eaten anything in over 8 hrs. You would think that wouldn't be possible. It is amazing how those tiny little bubble can hurt so bad. At least for me the really painful ones aren't also the ones that clear a room. If I had to live both of those horrors at once I don't know what I would have to do.
