Hello all you great people, I don't post a lot but, I sure am here everyday, staying in tune with whats going on. Now, for my dilema, yesterday when I got home I had 2 oz. of baked salmon with a little lemon juice. About an hr. after that I became very ill. It felt like someone had my pouch in their hand and squeezing as hard as they could. I threw up the salmon and had the dry heaves for almost 10 hrs. I thought I would die. (Would you all miss me? LOL). What in the h*ll could have made me this sick? Thanks to all of you for your advice and support. Ed

IHh Eddie! I'm not sure exactly what it could be but Ido know that fish STILL (at almost 4 years out) can sometimes get stuck and cause one to feel that way. Well, at least it does me! Now it doesnt keep going for hours like that but I usually end up throwing up...because it is so painful and it just doesnt want to move down. Your still a newbie (in my book) and different things will effect you differently.
Now other than that...being sick for that long..all I can say is maybe the fish was not fresh. Salmon in my opinion tends to be drier than most fish so I steer away..especially when eating out because it can easily be over cooked.
however,,,I WOULD MISS YOU! So stick around! will ya! lol... Glad all has passed and that your STILL WITH US!

Eddie, I am certainly no expert but I do know that there are people that have trouble with salmon. It has a very high fat content and some people don't tolerate it well after surgery. Try a white fleshed fish and see if you can't eat that without incident. Hope you are feeling much better by now.

Hi Eddie - Sorry you had a rough go.
Couple things: you added extra acid to your stomach bile (lemon & stomach bile are roughly the same acidic PH) which may have irritated your infant pouch. Next, salmon is rich in Omega 3 fat which is good for your health but can cause upset depending where where on your small intestine the stoma is attached and if you have a functioning gallbladder. In the beginning, although it sounds counterintuitive to your health, it is best to stick with lower-fat fish or shellfish.
Hope this helps and my goodness I hope you are feeling better.
And for the record: I would miss you very much so don't go getting nutty on me!!!

I ahd the same thing with a tilapia filet. I was sooooooo Sick. I still do't know what happened. The dr wants to see if it is an allergey. so I have to go for tests. I sometimes wonder if our pouches are empty and when we add acidic foods if that is what makes us so sick.
I do hope you are feeling well.
Pat
Hi Eddie,
I hope that you are feeling better by now.
The only issues that I've had from salmon is a sickly gut from the high fat if it is farm raised. I can eat wild salmon without issue.
One thing to think about is that maybe you didn't chew it well enough. We often think that since it's fish, it is "soft". Salmon is quite firm, especially if it is cooked with dry heat. Like, when we eat a piece of chicken, we know to chew forever because it feels "solid" in our mouth...not like fish does.

I agree with Kim, if it was dry that might have caused part of the problem. I know that when I get sick, it can last for hours and leave you feeling like a wet dishrag! I hate it. And there doesn't seem to be a rhyme or reason to half of it, so that gets really frustrating. I hope that you are feeling better and would miss you horribly!

Never had this happen so I have no words of wisdom but I want you to know that I for one would miss you bunches!! I value the male perspectives around here and you contribute so much!
If it were me and my stubborn self, I'd wait a few weeks and try it again and make sure to chew chew chew to make sure that under chewing wasn't the problem and see if it happens again.
I hate when good healthy stuff that I enjoy disagrees with me and always give it a few chances before eliminating it alltogether. Steak is one of those things for me.I usually end up throwing it up. It's just so dense no matter how much I chew but It is great protein and I love the taste so I keep trying. So many have told me that even at a year out, some stuff may eventually decide to agree with me when it's given me trouble before. I just keep trying.....

I feel the same way! You better not "check out" on us! We don't have that many guys willing to contribute here!
I don't have any trouble with salmon, but if you're a newbie you really have to be careful. The "dumping" thing is so awful you want to go to the hospital. I had the most terrible experience eating a banana and some vitamins and never took/ate either one again. I'm just saying, it would be very understandable if you never ate salmon again. I have to stay away from just about anything with high fat content. I learned a lot about "dumping" coming here, and in fact that's what brought me here in the first place.
Well, take care.

Could have been a bad piece of fish. Here's a link to the National Library of Medicine on food poisoning:
