Hey all! action-smiley-066.gif

O.K., here is my confession, I have not been taking my vitamins like I should, I would forget, lose track, whatever. I would take it here or there, but for the most part, ummm,"I'll take it later, it makes my coffee taste bad" and of course I would not get around to it angel-smiley-032.gif

A few months ago, I noticed in my right foot/toes/ankle, it felt a little numb. I ignored it. A month ago,if I wanted to move my toes, ankle, I had to do it with my hand. Just numb.

honest to goodness,(and this is how DUMB I can be!)I thought it was cuz I sat with my legs crossed ALL the time now that I can!

My Aunt said it sounded like "Dropsy" never heard of it, looked it up on the computer, didn't sound like me, BUT!, right under that it described my symptoms as not getting vitamins!DOH!
Started taking vitamins again(like clockwork!!) with in 3 days could move again, a month later completely normal.

Has anyone had/heard of this before?

Have Dr appt next month, will confess my "sin" to him then. Fully expect hip to slap me around a little.UGH!

Feelin' stupid,

Wow is that a wake up call or what?! I never realised that not taking our vitamins could have such big effects.

I must admit I'm not the best at taking my vitamins either. Not so bad in the mornings with the multi and the iron but as for taking the calcium at night! I can't remember the last time I took that. I try to remember but it's almost a losing battle.

OK.........late New Years resolution for me.............TAKE ALL MY SUPPLEMENTS!

Thanks for informing us about what happened to you and I hope everything is ok with you now.

Yeah, this is a very good story for us to all take heed of. Thank you for letting us know about this. And I'm very glad that you're alright?

Aloha,

I am also guilty of not taking my vitamins............................so I am taking heed. I'm going to put extra effort into this starting now.

Thanks for the reminder of why it is important.

I have posted more than once about my struggles with taking vitamins. The problem isn't entirely licked, but I have seen such good results from actually taking my pills every day that it would be truly foolish for me to stop now. With all the trouble I have had with stomaches, I just kept telling myself that I just couldn't bear to take something that I knew was going to make my sick tummy worse. I changed that mindset when I started having more symtoms that I knew were related to lack of vitamins. The prescription for Nexium that my doctor gave me has helped too. Now instead of a 24/7 bout with nausea, I only have a couple of times a day to fight it and it is usually gone in thirty minutes or so. Overall though, I feel so much better that I will continue to take my vitamins.

Please do the same. You don't need any complications from refusing to do something that you know you MUST do.

I made a chart on my computer and keep it on my refrigerator. Print new one off when it is full; mine has my meals, protein, water, exercise also so it is for a week, but you could do it however you want to keep track. I mark off the vitamins/minerals when I take them. It is right there so I see it all the time. It really helps me to not forget.
I attached my chart just to show you what I mean. Like I said, you can do it however you want to keep track. I have some things that I don't mark on the chart, but it has my basics.

Very nice chart, hope others look at it. I am going to tweak it to fit me and use it for awhile. I don't count grams, calories and stuff but it can be used as a basic keep me on track thing which right now I need to do.

neuro complications as you described are very common post RNY---due to the malabsorption

this is from one of my blog posts---

QUOTE
Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for many patients with morbid obesity, but this procedure has attendant risks. Neurologic complications are particularly serious potential complications of bariatric surgery, including myelopathy and ataxia associated with deficiencies in vitamin B12, vitamin E, and copper. Patients might also experience neuropathies related to other deprivation of essential vitamins and micronutrients. The classic presentation of Wernicke encephalopathy includes oculomotor abnormalities, mental status changes, and ataxia. Unfortunately, this classic presentation occurs in only 20% of cases of Wernicke encephalopathy. Examining risk factors for thiamine deficiency, including bariatric surgery, can help physicians diagnose this disorder.

I also did a very extensive series of posts on supplements---the first being this one---

Vitamins, Medications, and Malabsorption After WLS

there is a link in that post toa medscape article---you have to be able to access the site to read the whole thing---but I have it saved as a pdf file on my computer---if you would like to have a copy of it--pm me your email addy and I can send it to you--many docs aren't aware of these problems post WLS---I printed mine out and took with me to all my docs---it sure has helped in my care this past year....

This is really helpful! I am new to this and am facing surgey in 6 weeks. I too have been "a little loose" with my vitamin intake. Thank you for all the info. I will be pm-ing you when I figure out how to do it (Stupidity is due to computer illiteracy not lack of vitamins - at least yet!!)

You all are so smart!!!
