How many of you can do boys' pushups? How about pull ups? How many? I tried today. OMG, I'm a freaking wienie! I can do over 100 crunches though! Impressed? I'll be crying about it tomorrow. sick0022.gif

Anyway, I want to be able to do boys pushups and pull ups? don't you? How many should I be able to do by the end of this month? Any guesses?
Meliss
Aloha,

You go girl....................knowing you you'll be doing pushups and pullups by the end of the month. You have this get up and go thing that I admire. Once you set your mind to it, there is no stopping you.

I haven't even tried to do one crunch and maybe I should but never thought about it.

Getting motivated here............but as for pull or push ups, not yet.

Hugs
Meliss

I don't know WHY I want to do this. I just don't like it that I can't do it right now! How messed up is that? Is that mesed up?
Meliss
No not messed up. I find it typical you.

There is just no bridge I know of that you will not try to cross and that is what makes you so special and such an inspiration.

I don't know what 'boy pushups' are - but I'm pretty sure I can't do ANY! :-)

You are my exercise hero - way to go!

I haven't tried the pushups but I do know that I can do 10 pullups right now. Amazing cause I haven't been able to do them for years but I have always had very strong arms. The pushups would cause trouble for my knees so I don't think I will try that any time soon. I haven't a clue how many you should be doing but I do know that whenever I want to put myself in my place, I remember my athletic youth when I could do 100 of each in no time at all. That will never happen again!

Uhhhh NO!! laughing-smiley-011.gif

Well, I DOUBT I can do them....I have a hard time just lifting my ARCE outta bed! lol...

BUT YOU GO GIRL!!! party0002.gif WORK THOSE ARMS with weights and before long...you'll be able to lift your tiny self...UP AN OVER that PULL UP BAR!

Somehow..>I just KNOW YOU CAN DO THIS!!!

@Darien: Who is the boy in the photo--ask him, he'll tell ya!

@ Celadon: WHOA!!! I've NEVER been able to do a real pull up! I bet you can do boys' push ups too. I be you've got great looking arms!

@ Julie: Is that formal you're wearing on the cruise sleeveless???
Kim
Boy's stuff is for boys. I have no interest or need for being able to do a boy push up...does that make ME weird??? I also don't want to change the oil and I only take out the trash because I live alone. Let me tell you what...the minute I've got a man in the house is the minute that I quit taking the trash to the curb. Oh, and lifting the Arrowhead 5 gallon bottle of water onto the cooler unit...that's another thing that I don't want to do anymore... Okay, I'm rambling now.

If YOU want to do a boy push or pull up, then I say GO FOR IT!!! I'm with Julie though...I'm just happy to get my big old rear out of bed! Actually Sandi, I think that you'd be great on Amazing Race. You and DH...the perfect team!
BeJean
I'm w/ you on that one, Kim. No boy stuff for me. In fact, when they came out w/ "girl" pushups it was because they are kinder to the female organs. Why would we want to hurt them? LOL

I'm feeling good that I did ride my stationary bike 3 days this week & even went a tiny bit longer than I planned. AND I ENJOYED IT! I also pulled out my 3 lb weights & have been doing some arm exercises. Hope they will help my butterfly wings a little.

Hi Y'all,
The boy in the photo is my darling son, Jesse! I'll ask him about the push-ups tomorrow. He always takes out the trash and Jiffy Lube changes the oil!

Sandi, I would have great looking arms if it were for the bat wings I am developing from being obese most of my adult life! cry.gif It is nice to know however that there is still plenty of muscle under there! As for the boy vs girl stuff, I grew up the only girl in a house of boys and had only one daughter and three sons. Therefore, there was no difference in the sports we did. I played baseball with the boys, not softball with the girls so it was just normal for me to do the harder exercises without giving it much thought. Now, I feel that it isn't exercise if I don't do what I know I am capable of plus a boy push up won't hurt my knees and a girl push up isn't something I could even do now.
Sandi
@ Kim: well, there you go. I've no desire to race, I just don't want to be limited in what I can and can't do by my own choice. I know physiologically I won't be able to lift cars to look for lost dimes, etc, I don't want to be a muscle man, but I'd like to be able to lift my body out of more than the bed, too. That's why I had this surgery.

@ Celadon: I was always good at sports growing up too, I didn't like boys' pushups 'cuz I don't like the sensation of bending my toes backward...This makes me chuckle a little... Never thought about my knees having an opinion about what they preferred. But what's in a name? Girls vs Boys? Now we all pay big bucks to go to gyms where they put us on machines to simulate how we were supposed to play as children! Humans are nuts, you know?

WHoooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Sandi!!!!!!!!!! Check with Damon on this one... but I
believe the girl/boy push-up has to do with the way our arms are structured differently.
I'm going to take a look on WebMD and will let you know if I find something!

Sandi... I'm still looking but take on new, extremely exhaustive exercises with caution... I just found this caveat on WebMD about taking on extreme excercise suddenly.

"The breakdown of muscle fibers, for instance, may .....be toxic to the kidneys. If you have [heart problems] or are not screened, you could have a variety of exertional problems......, from serious tissue breakdown to heart attack to kidney problems."
So just be careful! Too much of a good thing CAN hurt us.

Appologoes Sandi... I've looked and looked online and found lots of women going for
this same goal.. Seems to be another myth shot down... Sorry for my hysteria! cry.gif
Keep us posted on your progress & GOOD LUCK!!!!!! sport-smiley-018.gif
Sandi
Well Mickee, it may be popular "out there", but it sure ain't popular here!!! huh.gif I appreciate you caring enough to go to the trouble of doing a search for ME...wow. I feel the lovin'!

I know it sounds extreme to want to be able to run and do pushups at my age. Maybe I'm just having a midlife crisis and should simmer down in a rocker somewhere with my knitting! biggrin.gif I should be glad to be alive, not out "pushing the envelope"!

I'll keep my "fanaticism" to myself... Not trying to rock any boats. ok.gif Just wanted to throw out an idea for those of you who cannot afford or are unwilling to endure the gym. smile.gif

Ahhhh where's the line?? You say to-may-to & I say to-mah-to~~~~~
You say "a dreamer" & "I say fanatic!!!!" No I DO NOT! biggrin.gif
I really just thought there was an anatomical difference in the bone structure
of male and female arms so that's why there was a push-up difference...
but it sure seems not be be mentioned on the web.
*I* personally would take enormous delight in whipping out a a few one
armed, full length push-ups at the gym. You know, with the nonchalant
attitude one aspires to when shooting pool??? cool.gif
Go for it Sandi! I wanna hear all about it when that one happens!
What fun!
Kim
YouTube it!!! Now THAT would be cool. All of us posting our video links at our attempts to do a boy push up. Oh my gosh, I'm laughing as I type this. I think that my arms would just buckle under the weight of this augmentation...then I'd splat and panic that I broke something internally...YIKES!

Okay...I'm getting on the floor to try this...

How low do you have to go??? I could lower myself about six inches...I did seven. Mind you, I had three very concerned Goldens smelling my nose as I attempted this. They were sure that I had dropped something...

Sandi,

I don't think it is a girl vs boy push up. It is a wimpie vs real push up. Sorry girls but it has nothing to do with anatomy. Just plain strength.

The best way to get to do more is to do as many as you can on your toes. When you fatigue keep on doing them on your knees. I say if you do them 4 times a week you will be doing 10 straight by the end of the month.

Real push ups are a great core exercise. It just isn't an arm work out. It works your entire upper body. Abs, chest, back. There isn't a better exercise for upper body. Those and squats and you are good to go for a quickie workout.

Now pullups are a real challenge. I would say practices those and doing strength training of other upper body as well would be the best way to tackle that one.

Good luck!!

Kim
Good point Ang! I felt it more in my belly than I did in my arms!!!
