Hi neighbors! I know I don't post much...but have an issue I need to discuss and hopefully find an answer for. Now...a few months ago I noticed a 'black' area at the gumline of 2 of my teeth. I freaked out thinking it was decay, but according to the dentist it's just demineralization as there's no pain/sensitivity. NOW...I have other damage to my teeth (mineral wise) due to the bonding 'glue' from having braces 3x. Would this new demineralization be from this or would this be from me lacking certain minerals/vitamins now as a 3+ year post op? Has anyone delt with this?

My blood calcium levels have always been good. I haven't supplemented calcium because I eat a TON of cheese & yogurt.

This is what I do take (vitamin wise)...

1 prenatal
1 Super B complex
and when I remember...bad me I know...1 sublingual B12.

I do need to stay on the prenatal vitamin because although I'm no longer pregnant, we are planning baby #2 in the VERY near future.

Any ideas?

I don't have an answer, but I am 5 yrs post op, and I also noticed the same thing. I have it on two lower, and one upper tooth on the left side. The dentist thinks I am brushing too hard, because it is on the opposite side of my dominant hand. I don't have any gum disease.

I keep thinking it has to be a nutritional thing too. I do take calcium 3000 mg a day. This was a recommendation from my OB/GYN. I just added 50 mg of zinc a day, because I have cracking at the finger tips. (The zinc cured it.) Zinc is supposed to help with gum issues.

Other than that, I am clueless, but am interested if this is related to WLS some how.

I saw this awhile ago, but guess I didn't reply. I read somewhere that chewable vitamins/meds can cause damage to teeth. Could that be the culprit?

Wow, how'd I miss this thread!? Very important topic. I've got no answers, but am vitally interested! I chew up pounds of ice per week, so I'm really worried about my teeth. Please someone, come up with some good answers to this thread!?

Thanks for the replies ladies. Looking back it started after I'd been back on my hypertension meds which I was told by the pharmacist that it can inhibit calcium absorption so I was told to space out when I took that & my calcium. So I'm wondering now if my BP med is leaching my calcium?

I keep thinking it has to be nutritional as well...but I'm unsure what to check for and I don't see my surgeon again now until my 4 year visit in August. But to be on the safer side I've started taking Calcium again.

As for vitamins...none of mine are chewable...at least anymore. I was on a chewable multi until I got pregnant in 11/05 and then I switched to a prenatal and have stayed on that so all my vitamins are pill form now.

Is zinc one that can get toxic if you take too much? I'd be interested in taking additional supplements...but don't want to take too much. Plus...I have to be careful because we'll be trying to get pregnant again VERY soon (just as soon as I get my IUD removed on the 31st).


If anyone else has any ideas...I'd love to hear them!

I am also having problems with my teeth and it is freaking me out. I seem to be losing the enamel, I'm thinking maybe it's the foamies causing this and my not taking my calcium pills as I should.

So I have slowly tried introducing milk back into my diet, which has made me sick for awhile, I got to where I can take a few sips and als0 have tried cheese, few nips. And my calicium chewables are in front of the computer so I don't forget.

My girlfriend Darcy who gained back 70 plus pounds was not taking her vitamins etc, had to get B12 shots, etc, had her teeth literally come loose and chip and fall out.

Now that scares me.

There is nothing in the library that relates to our teeth. I hope Kaye adds something cause I have stress about this.

I believe that the only way you can know for sure is when your labs come in. If you're teeth are losing their minerals, surely it will show up in your blood first. Kristy, I'm going to try to do some online research about this, it sounds like it's not the minerals if your calcium levels have been good up to now, but I can't believe that you should NOT take calcium--especially if you've been having children. Making babies is really hard on your calcium storage in your body!

But I'm confused...why did you quit taking chewable vitamins? I think that before you get the IUD out, you ought to get your PCP to do a real thorough blood panel. Just to be safe.

I have always worried about my teeth. Hubby has dentures and went through a lot of problems when he had hepatitis. The toxic treatment literally ruined his teeth and no one told him that would be a problem until it was too late to save them. He still has his lower teeth but all the uppers are gone. He regrets this every day. So, I freak over teeth issues. I have noticed that my teeth discolor easily but it is usually due to something I have eaten and as soon as I brush them they look fine again. I would be curious to know just what we can do to be sure we don't lose our teeth.

I'm certainly glad to hear that you are back on your calcium.

From all of the "smart" people out there, I hear that 1200 to 1500mg per day...for the rest of our lives...is critical!

The blood test only shows how much calcium is floating around in your blood. It does not show how much has been actually absorbed by your bones. In order to get these results, you need to do a bone density test...sort of like an x-ray. You've got to have that vitamin D with your calcium and your calcium needs to be in the form of Citrate.

The only thing my dentist suggested was to brush softer. She said that I was brushing too hard and that's what caused the ridges in my back teeth. As for the discoloration...she really didn't say anything about it. As for the blood workup...I'll talk to my doc when I see him on the 31st. My hypertension med is an ACE inhibitor and not a calcium channel blocker. I've taken physiology so I get how important Ca+ is for the body...but DUH...never really dawned on me about me not taking it. DUH! (slaps self in head)...

So...looking at my vitamins I'm supplementing 1100mg daily in addition to my cheese that I eat daily. Every day I have 2-3 0.75oz slices of coby jack, 1-2 cheese sticks, a little shredded cheese on my egg in the morning, and 1-2 slices of cheese (depends on how thick they are sliced) on my lettuce wrap at lunch...plus I eat a 4oz low carb yogurt daily. Can you say...cheese fiend?

As for why I stopped taking the chewable vitamins it had too much vitamin A for my pregnancy when I got pregnant with DD. My prenatal vitamin has 300mg calcium in it per dose. So I take that daily, and then (2) 400mg calcium citrates daily in addition to my Super B Complex. Oh...the calcium I take is the Caltrate Petites and it does contain Vit D to aide in absorbtion.

Does anyone know how much calcium we absorb at each time? I've been splitting up my calcium as to not take too much at one time.

Also, does anyone know if low vitamin or calcium levels can cause fatigue? I'd been bad for a while and had not been taking my vitamins for a few months and have noticed that I've been quite fatigued. I'm back to taking my vitamins daily...but I know it takes time to rebuild up stores if your deficient. Anyway I'm hoping to get my energy back! I hate to admit but I've been needing a MAJOR caffiene boost (had been drinking 2 SF Redbulls daily for a long time now) to get going and keep going throughout the day. I've reduced down to 1 Redbull a day for a few days now and next week it'll be 1 Redbull every other day...then the week after that it'll be one every few days...and the week after that...bye bye Redbull. I want to see what my blood pressure will do also when I'm off the caffiene. I'm hoping that if it stays at the level it's been...maybe the doc will allow me to stop meds and see what happens (the last time I had my bp checked it was 100/64). Anyway...

Great info on the vitamins/calcium/tooth thing...it's definitely a wake up call for me about taking my vitamins...

My nutritionist told me to take 400mg three times per day...with at least 2 hours between doses. Any more or any sooner is just a waste.

The B vitamins give me a natural boost.

I just had my labs done, and my surgeon noticed a low carnitine level. That can give you a feeling of fatigue. When you get your labs done, be sure and check that too.

I have read that you can't absorb more than 1800 mg of calcium in a day.

Yes, this vitamin thing is vital to our overall health, and it's worth the time and effort it takes to get your balance of everything right!

Thanks ladies. I'll be sure to take the 400mg each time at least 2 hrs apart.

I just took my bp med...so at noon I'll take my first dose of calcium, then this afternoon my b's & multi and then tonight my other calcium.

I hope this helps the teeth!


Oh...I've noticed my nails are not as strong too...maybe I'll head out to the store today and get some biotin...
