Why is it that we should not take Calcium and Iron at the same time?? How many hours apart should I take it??

Thanks a bunch!
BeJean
It has to do with absorption and how they interact. My pharmacist said 2 hours apart for any of the vitamins/minerals that can't be taken together.
The iron should be taken w/ food also.
A good idea is to take your list to your pharmacist & discuss what should or should not be taken together & then you can plan when to take each. My pharmacist was really great when I did this. I included my other medications as well & found one that needed a different place in my schedule.

Basically iraon and calcium do not live in perfect harmony in our pouches. You should wait at least 2 hours between taking calcium and iron or any supplements that don't cohabitat well together. I even space out my calcium from my multi vitamin as there is iron in it. Oh and iron is best absorbed when taken WITH vitamin c.

For me...

7am - I take my multi vit in the morning with my prescrip. meds

10 am - 2 citra cal + d and 1 400 vit d.

2 - 3pm - Iron and viatmin c

7 pm or later - 2 citra cal + d and 1 400 vit d.

And I take my other supplements in between.

Thanks for asking this. I knew I'm not supposed to, but never totally understood why either!

I deleted the post from Gina that was Dated 2009 --- here it is. Maybe this will fix the "new posts" problem:

Yeah I was taking iron with my first calcium tablet of the day with a protein shake that had a bit of fat in it. Then someone told me to take iron with vit C seperately. The thing that kills me is that some multis have Calcium and iron in them, so how the heck do you take that seperately??? Then add to the fact that I am on antibotics for my teeth roots, Pen VK, that I have to take every 6 hours and shouldn't be taken within 2 hours of any supplements! There re just NOT enough hours in my day for all of this seggregating! sad0049.gif I need a personal pill giver so I don't get off track which I seem to do everyday! Whew! I am tired just thinking about it!
