Hi, I'm Carolyn Ann and fairly new to this site. I'm on day 1 of the 5DPT.
My stats: Surgery 3/2004, lost 100#, needed to lose 175. I've now gained some so I need to lose 100#, hense the 5DPT.
I have been having a problem with my memory lately. I'm 57, at first I just thought, you know I'm getting older...It has become a problem at work, no one says anything, but you can no longer count on me to remember ANYTHING. My husband's been complaining for the past year, but honestly, I just thought he was exaggerrating. Well a couple weeks ago, I had a total blackout, Fell by the computer table and woke up in bed. Then my son says to me last week. Mom, I was stopped by last night and we talked about this, don't you remember? I didn't. I didn't even really remember that he had stopped by and not a clue about our conversation.
I went to the doc's yesterday. He feels confident that my Vitamin B levels are down and probably totally depleted. We're doing a brain scan just to check but he said: HALF OF THE BARIATRIC PATIENTS HAVE THIS SAME PROBLEM.
Thought, I'd share and I'll keep you posted on upcoming changes.

Welcome to the Neighborhood, Carolynn Ann. I have lapses. Sometimes I feel like my short term memory going. I do notice when I'm not eating as well as I should be that I'm a little hazy.

BLevels, Anemia, Carnitine, these all will show up as memory loss. Are you guys going through or have you recently gone through menopause? That's a factor. Do you have insomnia, sleep apnea or disturbed sleep? Have you been taking sleep aides for a long time? These will all show up as memory loss.
Get your labs done as soon as possible if you have dangerous memory losses or black outs. Carolyn when this happened to my father, they found out that his potassium was sky high! I hope that you find some real answers soon.
best wishes.

My labs are done every 3 months and nothing has been off. I'm diligent on my vitamins. I use to laugh that mine was pregnancy induced alzheimers. But the youngest is 3 now. I think part of mine is just from keeping up with the kids, but there are days where, like I said, I feel hazy.

I'm having my blood work done tomorrow. I hope to find out about my memory problems, as well. However, at 56 menopause can be related and I've been on Amitriptyline for sleep problems for about four years. My memory problems have increased during the past year. I also have balance issues as falling has become increasing over the past four years since surgery. That's how I broke my back, as well.

Just checking back in. I saw my doctor, ran my labs, and a CT scan. Doc said he felt sure it was that my B's were totally depleted. He said that probably 50% of WLS patientss he has, have a problem in this area.
I'm pretty good about taking my vitamins, but he said I was probably not absorbing the b's.
My cat scan was clear. however my B levels looked good but, I had a B12 SHOT the day before my labs, so we'll wait and see and run again.
It's not menopausal, I went through that more than 10 years ago. I do have sleep apnea, but use a CPAP machine and have for over 10 years. I sleep great most of the time. But, someone mentioned insomnia, and I'd say this has gone hand in hand with the memory loss and ability to focus.
My plan, to continue the B shots, create a better evening routine for sleeping, including my PM Yoga. and tracking my food. I'm on day 1 of 5 DPT. Just getting in touch and journaling and I'll see where that takes me.
My doc also said that he recommends that WLS patients B's sublingually - better absorption. FYI

I have been through the same thing. Major memory gaps. I am peri-menapausal and have a severe iron deficientancy. I have iron infusions every 3 months but the memory thing drives me crazyyyyyyyyyyyy.

I'm only 37... had gastric 15 mos ago, but my memory has always been bad! Now its worse! I haven't got any of the other health problems like sleep problems, etc. My labs always come back looking great... But I do notice that the memory isn't up to par. My friend shared something with me at supper the other night, then later I asked him "What are you doing to your house?" He said, "I just told you a few minutes ago." I didn't remember!! What's worse... having told someone something... like a piece of news, and then they repeated it later... and I said, "really? when did that happen?" They say "Don't you remember? YOURE the one who told me?!?"
Whew! I sure would not make a good liar! I could never remember the lie if I told one! lol

Hello. I just wanted to add my thoughts to this conversation. I remember getting really scared about my memory loss about 1 year ago. They were simple, almost funny situations but started becoming too regular. I would leave my sneakers at the pedicurist...then i left my house keys...i would leave my car keys at stores...etc.
I went online and did some research. What I came up with is that I should probably consider B-complex vitamins because in addition to memory, it would help with all of my nervous tissues. This became a major concern of mine and I was scared to know that the surgery could actually affect me in this area. So, I continued to research the best B-complex as it relates to absorption and I've been on it ever since.
I have to say that things have gotten better. They are not perfect but I'm no longer rocking in a corner crying...wondering what the h*ll is happening to me.
Good Luck,
Trofie

Wow...this sounds scary to me!!
First off..>WELCOME to the nieghborhood!!
WHEW! I've had a bad memory for awhile....part of it is listening...really listening. I'm also peri menopausal and i'm sure this has to do with it too..but i've never heard that this happens to post bariatrics. Interesting. Of course my b levels have always been HIGH so I dont take it regularly but I do take my vitamins regularly and rarely miss them.
But thanks for the heads up! I will certainly keep an eye on things and have an annual exam coming up in March!
Hope all gets better for you!! Hugs from Cali baby!! Julie

I'm so glad to see this post! I feel like my memory is getting worse and worse. I teach math, and somtimes I'll be in the middle of a lesson, and then it's like I just woke up! No idea what I was saying or teaching. My students just laugh, and I think they think I'm kidding around....but, I'm not.
I'm 41, haven't had the girlie monthy visitor since I was 38, and am on hormone therapy. I always just thought the memory stuff was related to my meds, but I'll definitely ask my WLS center at my appt at the end of February. I haven't had any labs done since my 6 month check up, so maybe I'll find something out then. I am lucky that I have trained myself to write everything down, b/c my memory was so bad, that I "forgot" it was Monday, and my principal called and asked if I was coming into work that day! We laughed it off to stress, but now that I'm reading these posts, I think I'll take it more seriously!

I have been dealing with it over the last year after I quit work and started having a very
stressless life. I've always been a list maker and doer. Burning food began to be a regular thing around my house. It may be a result of some effect of surgery but I think the more I hear, it is something with women in general. Maybe something in the water?

Are you taking Lipitor?????? They are now finding that people that take it are finding problems with memory and general fuzzy mindedness

I'm joining in with the ranks of the memory impaired. My 2 siblings and my husband also have had wls, and only my husband denies any memory problems. He is also very diligent about takinig his vitamins.
Everything I've read also links it to the B vitamins. I have added B Complex to my vitamin regime in hopes of making it better.
Can you imagine 30 yrs from now, there will be special nursing home wings set up for all us post wls patients who can't remember things well enough to be out on our own?
It should be a cheap nursing home to run. They can serve our tiny portions on saucers and in medicine cups! lol!

Hmm...interesting again as I read it. I didnt remember that I had ALREADY POSTED! lol..
Ok...seriously! I Lost a $75 gift card (seems i'm always misplacing something!) at Christmas 2006 along with $50 dollar bill! I found the $50 bill in the recycling bin right in the xmas card where I left it....apparently I got busy cleaning house! lol...Ok...I would NOT let the recycling go out till I checked it again and there was my $50 bill in the card inside a shoebox inside a bag of recycling..go figure!
Wierd thing is...I just FOUND the gift card a few days ago as I was wrapping some gifts! It was in a box (which I knew it was in a green foil little box)in a bag of gift bows...you know one of those $2 bags of bows...now COME ON!! I have wrapped ALOT of gifts in the past year and I just NOW find it in that bag...I mean as SOON AS I SAW THE GREEN BOX...I was like OMG!! I called my husband and said..."OMG, GUESS WHAT I JUST FOUND?" lol.. .he said..the GIFT CARD? lol. I about died! WHAT UP WITH THAT?
But as for every day stuff...I am peri menopausal as well and i'm glad to hear that i'm not the only one thinking I have lost my mind!!
I will be having everything checked..but my B's are generally HIGH! I'm diligent about taking my meds as well....so who knows!
Again...glad i'm not alone and thanks for the headsup! WHODATHUNKIT?
