When using a protein supplement such as IsoPure, Body Fortress or MuscleMilk
with water and ice for a protein shake, does this count as dairy?
My main question is... can an Iron supplement be taken in close time
proximity to consuming a Protein Shake???
Thanks in advance.

Hi Mickee! When in doubt, read the label. One regular serving of Muscle Milk has 35% of the daily adult requirement for calcium so I guess it could be counted as a calcium serving. That said, it is calcium phosphate, not the more recommended calcium citrate. If this doesn't make a difference to you, then count it as a milk serving. For me, it does make a difference because of my strange digestive makeup so I continue taking my Dots as suggested by BamaGal. I do drink the Muscle Milk Lite and they even carry it in our local supermarket now. How nice is that!

BTW, this label is for the regular MM.

But then is Iron not to be taken with dairy??? or with calcium?
If dairy.. do eggs count?
(trying to get this iron thing straight)

Sorry Mickee, I thought I responded to this one!

I do NOT take iron any time I'm getting any dairy. But I don't have dairy in my protein drink. Protein and iron together are good, calcium and iron together are bad. If you're having dairy for part of your protein, take your iron an hour later. If you have no dairy in protein drink, take your iron with. Or wait to have your iron until you're eating a piece of meat and have your calcium with your dairy protein drink...

Ka peesh?

Sorry for not answering the whole question Mickee. No, you shouldn't take your iron with calcium so you should take it when you know there is going to be a time span before and after with no calcium. Confusing, I know. Therefore, don't take your iron an hour before or an hour after a protein shake that is calcium rich. As for the eggs, they are not considered a serving of calcium so I would eat them without worrying about your iron supplement.

--->Sandi, what protein sup do you use that has no calcium?

--->Celadon, thanks for the answer on eggs! That is good news!

Hi Mickee, I wanted to check my protein powder before I answered this, and lo and behold, mine HAS calcium!!! I never thought about that! Thank you for making me look that over. I use the Body Fortress Brand, and it has quite a bit of calcium. I figured that since I wasn't using milk or yogurt to mix the drink up, I was safe... geez. When I bought the stuff, I had tunnel vision about the amount of carbs protein and calories, and didn't even look to see if it had any other nutrients...

Ok, so I won't take my iron with my drink. I'll save my iron for my protein MEALS!

Sorry for the misinformation!

Easy mistake to make San. And then I wondered if iron is ok w/ calcium but not
with milk... I seriously doubt it. Wouldn't that be cool.
Someone else on the list was saying their multi-vitamin has both calcium AND iron!
So, what's with THAT?! At times this all gets a little bit cwazy!! laughing-smiley-011.gif

Sometimes I just want to hire a nutritionist to come and sit with all my protein powders and vitamins and set up a few sample menus for me, and tell me what precise vitamins to take, and at what time. Then list everything that interacts with everything else. I haven't done it yet...cause I want to see if I can figure out what works for me. This life after wls...is harder than anyone told me before surgery...but so worth it!

<I have to agree with Kim on her other post though...this guy laughing-smiley-011.gif laughing-smiley-011.gif laughing-smiley-011.gif is SO cute!>

I don't think even a nutritionist knows for sure...the knowledge is evolving all the time. I feel like my gut is on fire from all the blankety blank vitamin pills I take in a day... just one damn thing after another, isn't it?

Sure is, but it is certainly nice seeing you tonight! cool0012.gif
