I can't access the library for some reason. I've looked at what I can find on hair loss and haven't found an answer that I understand. I had lap band surgery but am loosing weight at a rate more like a gastric bypass patient. When I had my hair cut today, I was told it was thinner than it has been. So.......taking into account posts like Kaye's in the embarrassing questions sections, I'm unsure what to do.
I dothink I loose more weight when I eat more, such as adding a protein shake to my 3 meals and an evening SF pudding snack. Should I push the calories higher? Are there certain food groups I might need that I'm not getting?
What is biotin?
I've had some problems with facial hair in the past and I don't want to be growing a beard!!
Suggestions????
Thanks,
ITM

Biotin is a B vitamin...I have been taking 2 capsules daily since about 6 months post op because of hair-loss. It strengthens hair and nails... I also use Nioxin hair products and have been since I came home from wls...I hardly use anything else. I am almost 5 yrs out and my hairdresser just told me in November that my hair was "finally" in the best shape it had been in since pre-wls...I lost LOTS of hair before I started taking Biotin...btw, you can get biotin @ any GNC or I bet even Wally World...I order mine online from a vitamin/supplement place Swansonvitamins.com...hope this helps...

I think you will be good with taking the biotin supplements. I have to watch out for extra fuzzies as well and I didn't notice any difference in adding biotin in. I lost a great deal of hair and haven't fully recovered yet but I think the supplements do help lessen the affects.

Honestly, I don't know that the Biotin, ground Flax Seed or Silica are doing a dang thing...but I'm terrified to stop taking any of it!
In the early days, there isn't anything that could be done to solve the issue of hair loss. The only thing that can be done is to get all of your protein in, take the supplements and hope to heck that they work!

I was losing a lot of hair about 6 months out from surgery. I started taking Biotin every day and my hair quit falling out. I have no proof that these two things went together, but I'm going to keep taking the biotin. I don't know much about it except that it's part of the B vitamin group...
Oh, and I haven't had an increase in facial hair...it's the same as it's been....

When I added Biotin to my supplements my hair FINALLY stopped falling out and is growing back. Have had NO issues with facial or unwanted hair either. I take 5000mcg daily. Hope this helps.

Keep in mind it is normal to lose 100 hairs a day. Hair has a life cycle and replace themselves. As a former cosmetologist I had to keep telling myself that 100 hairs a day is "normal'!!! Nope I didnt like it one bit and yup had the "Paula Young" catalogs on hand!!! Just in case!!!lol yES i AM VAIN!!!
Also the hair loss is associated to the shock of surgery as well as the rapid weight loss!! So when our bodies recover from the shock of surgery it now has to battle the rapid weight loss.
Hair is made up of protien so lots of protien is good, the other issue is the folicle and keeping it healty too which is what the biotin and other vitamins assits with!!
So dont worry that the hair falling out wont replace themselves but as with everything it takes time to grow back in.

I started taking Biotin about 1 week post op and I have lost quite a bit of hair but I keep thinking it will stop, I hope so. The Biotin is a B vitamin and it helps skin, hair and nails. I think its working but I'm told at my support group meetings that hair loss at 3 months post op is normal. I just keep praying it will slow down and taper off.

I experienced this the same as Sandi explained in her thread. 6 months, hair begins falling out. I eat my protein and take my biotin. I love my biotin, and won't stop taking it.
