Full Version: Some Faq's For New Neighbors
LAWLS Neighborhood > Welcome Neighbors! Public Forum for Members & Guests > Introductions
Kaye
Hello and WELCOME to our great new freinds here in the Neighborhood! We are glad you are here and hope you enjoy our safe haven circle of friends!

We receive many questions from new Neighbors so here are some quick answers. If you still have questions go ahead and ask away, we will try to help.

FAQ's

Why can't I view some of the forums?
We have two grades of membership here: Members, a free registration with limited access and Premier Citizen with full access to all forums, the opportunity to create a hosted blog and album which is private to lurkers and search engines. We do not allow advertising on the LivingAfterWLS Neighborhood and search engines are only allowed on the public forums. This is part of our safe haven environment. The minimal fee for Premier Citizen membership is small and simply covers the cost of extra bandwidth. Learn more.

Holiday Subscription Special Extended
: Over the holidays we offered 2-years for the price of one ($60 or only .08 cents a day!) In celebration of our booming growth this offer is valid through January 31, 2008. Click My Controls >> Options >> Paid Subscriptions to upgrade today!!!

Why do I see two page formats in the Library and Kitchen?
We are in the middle of a website conversion and upgrade. The yellow/blue pages are from our previous website and the celebratory green with rainbow ribbons is our new design. We are working to get all pages converted and broken links repaired. Thank you so much for understanding and patience while we remodel our beautiful Neighborhood.

How do I learn to use the Neighborhood?
Click the Help guide in the upper right corner for several great topics and articles.

Post a question and ask your Neighbors!!!

What is the "Permission to Quote" all about?
I often pull knowledge from the Neighborhood to share in articles, interviews and when I speak to groups. If you have indicated "Yes" on permission to quote I may use your words and online name in a future article, interview or speech. I am most respectful and sensitive to your needs -- they call me "MamaKaye" because I'm a tad-bit over protective of our Neighbors. So if you are comfortable click yes; if you prefer privacy select no and I will respect both choices.

How do I know where to post something?
We don't really have hard and fast rules here. Introductions Forum is a good place to jump in and say hello. Our Town Square is mostly WLS topics and our Picket Fence is the Neighborly general conversation section of the community. Want to connect with friends in your area? Go to the Global Community. The Bulletin Board has announcements and helpful site hints.

What do the little leaves under the names mean?
Those are called pips and associated with the number of posts a Neighbor has made: the more posts, the more pips. Check here for our Member Ranks.

Is there a special place for the 5 Day Pouch Test.
Yes, the 5 Day Pouch Test Forum.

What is the Neighborhood Cookbook and how do I get it?
Last year we published the first ever cookbook for WLS by WLS patients. It's a down-home cookbook with authentic recipes that real cooks with real lives can make to nourish and feed their WLS and their family. Order it online here for $18.00 + 3.75 S&H and receive a FREE gift!

Ok, I think that answers most for now, but if not, please post here or ask a Neighbor.

THANKS & Have Fun!

BeJean
Someone may want to know how to update the ticker also:
Once the ticker is in your signature you just need to click on it anywhere on the site and you will be taken to the edit page in tickerfactory.com . Follow the steps to edit it. It will automatically update in the LAWLS site.

Thanks tamee & Jeannie --- much appreciated!!! Do we have any other new-member questions?

Understanding the Public & Private Boards

On our Benefits of Registration page you will see that we have two levels of membership.
The first group, Members, is a free membership and with limited access to the public forums. The forums are listed and include: Welcome Neighbors, Introductions, Bulletin Board. The Town Square - LivingAfterWLS Knowledge Center including the forums WLS Chat; Power Tools for LivingAfterWLS; Diet, Nutrition & Supplements; Exercise & Fitness; Pre-Ops & Newbies; Men & Weight Loss surgery; Obesity, Health and Wellness. And access to The Picket Fence: LivingAfterWLS Social Center including the forums: Picket Fence, Celebration Page and Community Kitchen. These forums are visible to guests, lurkers and search engines. It is necessary that some of our forums are available to search engines because it is searches that lead new members to our community.

As a Member you will see other forums, but not have access to them. These are available to Premier Citizens who pay a minimal subscription fee. These forums are closed to guests and search engines and Members. They generally cover more sensitive topics and therefore kept private. In addition, the blogs and galleries are invisible to search engines and guests and a benefit of the Premier Citizen subscription is having this secure environment for blogging and sharing photos.

It is a fine line to straddle: protecting the privacy of the Neighborhood, while at the same time taking advantage of the search engines that lead people to our community. The majority of weight loss surgery forums on the internet are fully open to search engines; this is one of the few WLS Communities that has several areas closed to search engines and is not polluted with advertising.

We do tests (daily) on all levels of Membership and logged out just strolling around as guests to make sure that the secure areas are secure and the open areas are open. I encourage all of you to log-out once in a while to refresh your memory regarding which areas are public and which are closed to Premier Citizens and Foundation Members.
