Have been doing the South Beach low carb diet and eating way more vegetables than I ever did before (hello broccoli, cabbage & cauliflower, goodbye potatoes!). I can tolerate a day or two of "strong" veggies but I get bad, ahem, troubles if it goes on for more than 1-2 days in a row. No trouble with lettuces, green beans, peppers, mushrooms or just about any other veggie, just these 3. Really have acquired a taste for roasted cauliflower with garlic, I can almost like that as much as mashed potatoes with garlic. Really like my stir frys with broccoli and have been making a tomato cabbage soup with brown Splenda that almost tastes like deli cabbage borscht. Other than banning them from my diet, which I would prefer not to do, any herbal/diet supplements (does Beano work with this?)? Thanks Neighbors!

I have read here that a lot of people have trouble with the veggies in the cabbage family, mostly the cauliflower and broccoli. Very, very gassy. I haven't had a problem as long as I don't eat too much of them. Since I am only six months out, I can't eat much of them right now anyway. There is nothing I like better in the way of veggies than roasting them in the oven!

Cabbage and broccoli are veggies that I only indulge in when I am home for a weekend alone...any other time, they are 'duck and cover' vegetables, as my better half terms them. Cauliflower is something that I can eat, however I only attempt it if it is mashed like potatoes would be, and only then about a quarter of a cup of it is enough.

Ha, I just posted about this. I didn't see your post. Umm, nope I cannot tolerate them at all. Well, ket me rephrase that. They go down just fine. It is just what my body decides to do with the gas that they produce is not tolerable to anyone in any close vicinity. For me Gasex and Beano help with any painful gas just not with making me good company.

Huh, I don't have this problem with any of those. I am grateful, as I eat all three on a regular basis.

I also have no problem with those. I do find that raw carrots which i use to love are just down right painful if i eat them. But i should say being MAN!! we take pride in making the family members gag, choke and leave the room. Now for all you women who are above this............ When your in the store remember when you have a sneaker always look at the spouse or the children with disgust then move on, they will become embarrassed or deny which makes them look all the more guilt!!!!

I've been lucky that I haven't had any problems with veggies of any kind. I enjoy them all, both raw and cooked. I know some people have problems with these vegetables, though - even people who havent had by-pass surgery. They can cause gas and bloating. You might try the anti-gas pills. They're simethicone and seem to work pretty well for gas - my hubby uses them.

I cannot tolerate broccoli since my surgery and it was my favorite before. I can eat cabbage no problem and haven't tried cauliflower.
