I'm scheduled to have RNY at the end of this month, 2/26. I went yesterday for my pre-admissions testing where they did a whole slew of tests. One of them was an EKG. It came back 'abnormal' and I have to go see an cardiologist to get an surgery approval letter before they will let me have the surgery. The examining Dr at my WLS clinic said he wasnt too concerned about my results, but the anesthesiologist wouldnt do the surgery unless I get further checked out..
My results for the ekg said:
Vent rate: 79 bpm
PR interval 170 ms
QRS duration: 96 ms
QT/QTc 384/440 ms
P-R-T axes 28 46 14
Normal sinus rhythm
Cannot rule out Anterior infarct, age undetermined
Abnormal ECG
I have scheduled an appt with a Cardo Doctor.. but I don't know whether to be freaked out about this.. or annoyed.. or what it means.. I'll get the answers when I see the specialist. but Hoping some one here has some insight :(

This wrinkle in the process doesn't mean the surgery can't happen. It does mean the doctors are being vigilant in your best interest. It is amazing how thorough they are. Try and stay positive!

Fuzzy, I'm sure you wasn't under any stress at the time? We all know what a beating our hearts take trying to pump blood all over our bodies. Add a "little' stress, maybe the bloodpressure was a "little" elevated and whalla you have an abnormal EKG. And throw in someone not putting the patches where they should align, just go and get checked out, and don't worry about it, it will just raise you BP more. I'm sending good thoughts and prayers your way.
I had that happen to me when I was 21 y/o. They told me the ekg showed I had had a heart attack. It was for a job and of course I was totally freaked out. Well I went and had another one done at a different location and all was fine. Sometimes the machines are just off for what ever reason. Don't let it worry you like it did me. Just go see the cardio and I'm sure everything will turn out fine. They are just trying to be diligent.

Hi,
I've been there-done that. The same thing happened to me with only a week to go before my surgery. It took some phone calls to find a cardiologist I could see that quickly, but I found one. The cardiologist said there were many reasons the EKG could show a problem that isn't really there. He scheduled a cardiac ultrasound which showed no problem so my surgery was a go. Chances are good you are fine.
Hope all goes well,
ITM

Fuzzy,
I hope all will come out OK & the surgery will still be on. Better safe than sorry!

My surgeon requires a complete cardio workup for that very reason. Sometimes one test doesn't tell the whole tale. I was fortunate to have all the the tests run because I would have freaked if they told me I had an abnormal test. Just see the cardiologist and relax between now and then.

Thank you everyone.. I was lucky enough to get an appt with a Cardiologist early this upcoming week.
I'm glad my Dr's are being careful.. and As you've said.. Most likely nothing other than a more precise test needed

Hang in there fuzzy, all is not lost. I'm glad that you got an appointment with the cardio doc so quickly. You are wise to be so thorough and patient and to work with your team. This is not about getting the surgery, it's about living the best life you possibly can. Don't want to have any "ugly surprises" on the Operating Table!!!
Carry on, we're all rooting for you and sending warm FUZZY thoughts for you!

fuzzy i had a similar ekg, during my stress test, numbers were different, but it also said cannot rule out anterior infarct, abnormal ekg....anyway i had to be cleared by a cardiologist, which i was, then two days before surg i had preop bloodwork and ekg at the hospital, and again the ekg was abnormal, so i had to run to my cardiologist's office again, the next day (day before surg) to get cleared again, which i was, and surgery went on as scheduled and everything went fine, but it's best to make sure before surg and anesth.

That happened to me too. Doc said it looked like I had had a heart attack. I said "Don't ya think I would have know if that had happened?????"
Turns out, everything was fine. Just weird test results.
