Ok, so we are about to confuse you...Toris said no and I would normally say no but there was a thread on here about shakes and protein bars and I believe Kaye said that the point of the 5dpt is NOT to starve so if you are hungry or whatever you can supplement with shakes and protein bars on ANY day of the 5dpt...of course the people who experience the greatest success are the ones who follow the directions by the letter...I will look for the link....ok don't know how to insert it....the title of it is 5DPT: ASK A QUESTION, YOUR PLACE TO ASK ABOUT THE 5DPT...
So since I couldn't insert the link I have inserted Kaye's response to 2 questions:QUOTEPosted Jan 4 2008, 01:24 PM This is my day 1, I made cabbage soup with onions, celery and tomatoe paste, cooked in chicken broth. I let it cook until the cabbage is very soft, (I mash it with a spoon in the cup). Is this okay, or did I mess up for the day, and have to start all over tomorrow??
QUOTEThis is fine. The thing to remember on the liquid days is to measure your portion and do not exceed it. Also eat within 15 minutes. I know most centers tell you 30 minutes, but after being out from surgery a while we tend to be able to eat more in that 30 minutes. The 15 minutes gives us enough time to eat without letting our portion slide away.
Wanted to take a moment to thank you for the 5 day pouch test diet plan! I had my surgery 9 months ago and have lost 85lbs so far. I struggled through the holidays and found myself craving all the yummy carbs that I know I need to keep away from. Someone suggested your 5 day plan and a group of us are following it! Im on day 4 and doing great. However, some of us on the plan are confused and we arent sure if we’re following it correctly. There seems to be some confusion on whether or not we are suppose to add the new days food to the previous days, or just simply eat only what is listed on the new day?
I have been eating only what is on the days plan, meaning now that im on day 4 I have excluded my protein drinks, jello, soup, eggs ect. From plan days 1, 2, and 3. I am only eating ground beef, turkey, shellfish, ect. Is this correct? Or should I be drinking my protein and having the jello, soup, eggs, ect.??
Please help. Many of us have read the instructions on your plan several times and we all read it differently!! I really want to follow this plan correctly and would like to do it every 6 months or so to keep on track! QUOTE
Kaye's Response.....
In the best of circumstances it is best to follow the food plan for each day because you are marking the progression from liquids to soft protein to firm protein to solid protein. That isn't always easy to do and carrying foods forward from the previous day is ok -- just don't eat a Day 5 food on Day 3 or it will confuse your pouch. The instructions for Days 3-5 also state, "Include protein Shakes or Bars as needed to prevent hunger." Remember, you are not supposed to be starving on this plan. And an egg for breakfast is fine - I understand if grilled salmon or poultry doesn't sound appealing first thing in the a.m.
Hope this helps.
Maybe this will be helpful to you...Blessings and luv!

Hey Amelia, I took Kaye's answer to think of protein bars & drinks as meals (you might have to at 5 meals a day, but they are considered meals). These, i think fall more into the "snack" category which we are trying to get away from on the 5dpt. The GOAL of the 5dpt is to feel your pouch. These, in no way, are large enough to make you feel your pouch - and, as such defeat the purpose of the 5dpt. Protein bars and snacks are large enough to make you feel full. These are filling, but they don't serve the same purpose.
We've gotten to where we are by saying "oh this won't hurt" - by tweaking the rules to get what we want (for example, protein drinks are o.k. so pb balls are o.k. too). The 5dpt is only 5 days. If we want to be successful, we need to follow the list and stop trying to tweak the program.
I also want to add - while these are high in protein, they are also high in fat - and have some filler (the nonfat milk). Best to stick to straight protein.

Ok "sarge II"....lol!!!
I guess I wasn't thinking about it that way because they do have the ability to fill me up(2-3 of them and I make them smaller than the "36" servings; instead I get about double that)...and I equate them with protein bars because of their protein content AND I was thinking (not trying to tweak, seriously, I wasn't) that since they consist of basically the same "ingredients" as a protein bar without all the extra's and because they are generally the same ingredients as a "shake"( with only the four ingredients) that it would be ok, but all of these are ONLY to supplement if the other foods are not keeping you satisfied or at least that was/is my interpretation....
I really do not know. Again this is just my interpretation and I failed to add that information to my earlier post...sorry if I was misleading....I'm nutso! I mean I understand that ideally the best thing to do is follow the rules to the letter...Thanks for bringing this to my attention...

LOL, you're cracking me up with the Sarge stuff!
Ideally, you're right, it's best to stick to the letter of the law. I guess if we HAD to supplement with something other than what's on the list, or the protein shakes, or the protein bars, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, but my thought is "why chance it." If I'm going to go on a 5 day program, I'm going to make sure I do it right so I don't have to do it again (which means being a purist and following it as closely to the letter of the law as possible). Can you tell I'm a Type A, Anal person? :o)
I only eat one of these in a sitting (my batch made more than 36 - maybe 45-50? I lost count). If I ate 2-3, it would definitely fill me up and could be a meal - but then I'd be missing out on the other nutrients I can get from a 'better choice' MEAL - i.e., 4 oz of fish and a side of brocolli.
For me, I use these to supplement my "DAY 6" diet. My calories from just protein & complex carbs in 3 meals & 2 snacks of SF pudding was only reaching about 650-850 calories. I use these, in lieu of the SF pudding, to add protein and calories to my diet - so my metabolism doesn't shut down. I don't think it's necessary to worry about this on the 1st 5 days. It is, however, a concern for the long term.

LOL! I wouldn't make it a habit of eating them...but I guess if it's between that and a Reesee a pb protein ball would be the better choice! :) I haven't eaten them on the 5dpt (oops yes I did a tiny 1) but it would work if a protein bar or shake is unavailable....I have a new name for you...."TA Sarge" (TA = totally anal)...lol!
Actually I love that you keep me straight...that's what the n'hood's for, huh??? Who knows I may get to be your TA Sarge 1 day! I guess I'm a purist to a point and then there's "grace"....can be good and can be not so good!
Luv & Hugs my wls sister!

LOL! Your Reeces comment reminded me of something. After eating one, my husband actually said...the only thing better would be if these were coated in Chocolate! *eye roll* I about smacked him!
