Full Version: Stomach Flu?

Hi everyone,

Yes, I know that its not technically stomach flu, but probably gastroenteritis (probably misspelled that).

I had my gallblader removed when I had my RNY done because my gallblader was full of tiny stones (not bothering me at that time, but my mother suffered horrible gallblader attacks).

So now I've got the stomach flu and since yesterday I've been throwing up what I really think is bile. This is probably venturing into the TMI place, but I got so sick that I couldn't eat and when I didn't eat I started having the dry heaves and vomitting bile (yellow, tastes HORRIBLE, and burns my throat and mouth).

Should I even be able to vomit bile after RNY and having my gallblader removed?

Any advice for a post RNY person with the stomach flu. I'm trying to keep myself hydrated (lots of ice chips).

TIA,
Pixel

Hi Pixel,
Oh, I'm so sorry to hear you are so sick!
I don't have any experience with the flu yet - thank God; but perhaps you should call your surgeon, maybe they can give you something to stop the vomiting.
I hope you feel better SOON! angel-smiley-002.gif

Hi Pixel,

I am almost 5 years out and I have never had the stomach flu yet. I have worried about it though. It hurt so much that first year after WLS when I was vomitting a lot, that I couldn't imagine having the flu! I'm not sure about whether or not you can actually vomit bile with no gall bladder. But I bet it is just like the "stuff" that would come up, right after the surgery, the foamy biley "hot" stuff? It can't hurt to check with your doc. Have you had the flu before, since your WLS? I think the ice chips are a good idea, when you start to feel a litle bit better, but I'd try and give your tummy a break for a few hours with nothing, not even ice chips. Just a thought.

I'm so sorry you're sick and I hope you feel better soon!!!!

Gentle hugs, Jules

If I remember my physiology, bile is secreted by the liver & the gallbladder is just a storage vessel for it until it is needed. So, I think you could still vomit bile after the gallbladder is gone.
I do agree w/ others who said, "Call your doctor." Better to be safe than sorry!

Sweets, I hope that you start feeling better soon. I have only vomitted twice since surgery and both were pretty extreme cases. Let your stomach rest for a few hours like Jules said and then if you still aren't keeping fluids down for more than 36 hrs I would give your doc a call. Even if you just get soemthing to help with the nausea it would be better than nothing.

hugs!

action-smiley-066.gif My thought is bile is not meant to be anywhere but in the stomach, so if your stomach hasn't settled by now, call your doctor or call the pharmacy, they can often suggest something OTC that might help with the acid.

My deepest sympathies going out to those of you who are sick. Hope you feel better soon!!!

To answer the question, I am over 10 yrs post op WLS and almost 8 of that is post-RNY. I have vomited bile numerous times. Totally different than having a food issue and at least for me it is much more violent. The pouch has to work to get it up but it can happen! Anybody have y our stomach seize up in a huge charley horse while you are trying to throw up? Happened to me a few nights ago. I am bent over cause I'm sick but then the muscles in my lower stomach go into spasm so I have to straighten back up and become a contortionist to get the kink out all the while still getting sick. Told my hubby that if it hadn't been so dang painful it would have been almost comical!

Seriously though, anytime I think I have something that is going to make me vomit regularly then it is time for the Phenergan suppositories for this gal. If I don't have them on hand I start calling my doctor. Hope you will do the same!

Hugs,
Kellye
