Is is all right to chew sugarless gum during the 5 DPT? It seems like a good idea if I feel the need to chew something while I'm doing all liquids. Does anyone have any advice or experience with this? Thanks.

Gum was recently discussed in another thread entitled
Straws. It is quite informative.
Gum - bad to swallow and causes gas. It is better to sip water, instead of chewing gum.
I hope this helps you.

Hi Susan,
I personally chew gum all the time. I'm 5 years out and have never had a problem. But I was never a gum swallower, which I understand would NOT be good for our pouches! I did not chew gum for the first year though, I'm not sure how far out you are.
I agree with Marla, sipping water is the better thing to do, but I think you can chew gum as long as you don't swallow it! And it is a good idea, for something to actually chew! I had not thought of that. I am on day 2, everything's going great, but I can't wait to actually chew tomorrow!
How about you? Are you on the 5dpt now?
Hugs! Jules

Hi Jules and Marla:
Thanks for your replies. They are very encouraging. I am 3+ years out from surgery. I lost 140 pounds and kept it off for quite a while, but I have begun to regain - about 18 pounds at this point, and I'm scared. I'm going to get everything I need together and start the 5 DPT on Monday.
This is a particularly busy week with a lot of dinner and lunch commitments. I'm watching what I eat, but I can't start the 5 DPT until Monday. I'm looking forward to feeling in control again.
P.S. I don't swallow gum, so it's not a problem. Many years ago I tried Optifast and craved being able to chew something. Thus, I thought about the gum.

Hi Susan,
Good luck next week. I understand the committments, I purposely made NO plans this week so I could do it! It is just easier that way! Let us know how you do. I'll keep posting how my week is going. So far so good except I did get a headache today but it went away with some Excedrin.
And I had some gum today, thanks to your post and I loved it!!! I hadn't even thought of that, for chewing and I'm grateful you asked that question! So thank you!!
Hugs and good night!

I'm on day 2 myself. Yesterday I had 4 bottles of water and then about 3 big glasses of Crystal Light (LOVE the Peach Iced Tea, but I hardly ever make it) But today I don't think I've had 2 bottles. Going to get a glass now.
I am 2 1/2 years out and I have never swallowed gum either, it really does help to chew.
Back with water :) I tried the 5dpt a couple months ago, but I couldn't get thru the first day. I'm determined this time! I really want to get back on track so I can lose my last 29 pounds!

Barb.. make sure you actually prepare some of the recipes. Especially the soups.
They make up quickly and provided me with a nice satisfied feeling through day 2.
Everybody loves the pumpkin sausage soup and the Lentil Barley is great too.
I gotta say, I felt pampered. Don't second guess the ingredients either. I know
they sound rich and they are... but they replace the rich, temporary satisfaction
we got from carbs with a long lasting satiety tides us over to the next meal.
Good luck! And try to enjoy the journey!

I ran out of gum at work the other day and kept finding myself in the kitchen looking for something to put in my mouth. Gum may not be the best, but for me personally it's the lesser evil.

Thanks Mickee. When I made the decision to start this it was the evening before day 1 - spur of the moment at the grocery store, and I didn't have the recipes with me. I improvised by getting a couple cans of lentil soup, and a vegetable soup mix with split peas and beans, then I added ham and chicken breast and pureed it. the other days I did try some. I had the parmesan fish, mustard chicken, salisbury steak and the tuna patties - all yummy! If I find myself at that road again I will try the soup recipes.

My mother said if I swallowed a water mellon seed, they would grow in my stomach!
Ew - what would gum do?
(I eat gum with caution...)
