Is there a list on the site of foods=protein? I know I can find it somewhere, but now that I am addicted to this site, I was wondering if someone had created a list and where to find it.

thanks
Paula

There isn't one that I know of on the site but I will do an extensive research and get one posted in the Community Kitchen. In the meantime, here is a short list:

  • Most cuts of beef – 7 grams of protein per ounce

  • Chicken breast, 3.5 oz - 30 grams protein
  • Chicken thigh – 10 grams (for average size)
  • Drumstick – 11 grams
  • Wing – 6 grams
  • Chicken meat, cooked, 4 oz – 35 grams

Fish
  • Most fish fillets or steaks are about 22 grams of protein for 3 ½ oz (100 grams) of cooked fish, or 6 grams per ounce
  • Tuna, 6 oz can - 40 grams of protein

Pork
  • Pork chop, average - 22 grams protein
  • Pork loin or tenderloin, 4 oz – 29 grams
  • Ham, 3 oz serving – 19 grams
  • Ground pork, 1 oz raw – 5 grams; 3 oz cooked – 22 grams
  • Bacon, 1 slice – 3 grams
  • Canadian-style bacon (back bacon), slice – 5 – 6 grams

Eggs and Dairy
  • Egg, large - 6 grams protein

  • Medium cheeses (Cheddar, Swiss) – 7 or 8 grams per oz
  • Hard cheeses (Parmesan) – 10 grams per oz

Beans (including soy)
  • Tofu, ½ cup 20 grams protein
  • Tofu, 1 oz, 2.3 grams
  • Soy milk, 1 cup - 6 -10 grams
  • Most beans (black, pinto, lentils, etc) about 7-10 grams protein per half cup of cooked beans
  • Soy beans, ½ cup cooked – 14 grams protein
  • Split peas, ½ cup cooked – 8 grams

Nuts and Seeds
  • Peanut butter, 2 Tablespoons - 8 grams protein

You can also log your foods onto these sites and they will tell you what protein, carbs, fat grams you get

Fitday.com (doesn't show sugar gram content, nor does it have all the brands of food)
TheDailyPlate.com (this one is the only one I know that shows your sugars, AND is brand name specific)
Spark.com I think but I have never used this one.

Paula and Celadon:

Here is a link to the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) site which is where I had my surgery. On the left side menu "is a "Nurtrition Nook". Once you go to this site, you will find a great protein content site and Celadon, they have a webmaster link if you wanted to put this on the neighborhood resource. It is very good.......

Hope this helps..... sport-smiley-001.gif

Doug, this is wonderful. First, your bariatric center is a "Center of Excellence". What that means is that they had to go through rigorous qualifying to be able to use that logo. These "Center of Excellence" sites ensure that you will get the most up to date treatment and the best follow through available and you really go through a lot before surgery to be prepared. The idea is that the informed patient is the the patient that has the least complications.

I will ask Kaye if we can link to this valuable database and pin it in the Community Kitchen. Thank you so much!
