Well, yesterday was four weeks since I came to sit on the losers bench and I'm still very happy to be here. I had my one month Dr. appt. on Thursday and I was down 40 pounds on the office scales. He laughed and said, "What, are you a slacker?" He was happy, as am I. He released me to return to regular food. I had out of town company in and when we went to lunch (took them to a great barbeque place), I ordered a smoked turkey sandwich. I ate 1/2 of the turkey on 1/2 of the sandwich. It took me over 20 minutes, but it was great. I cooked a great Valentine dinner for my wife and company and used recipes from several of the low carbohydrate and WLS cookbooks I've gotten. They loved the dinner and I ate 1/2 of one slice of the pork tenderloin I made. Again, tasted great.

Since Thursday, I have added Wendy's chili, cheese, and my very favorite - SHRIMP. Dinner last night was four shrimp that tasted exactly like I remember. My OMG I'm full feeling doesn't kick in until about 20 minutes, so I have to be careful to eat slow. So far, I have not finished any meal which I prepared for myself. That's a huge change for me. I was raised as a clean your plate kid, so this is one behavior I need to seriously modify.

One down side to report is an inability to tolerate milk. That includes skim milk, lactaid, and even soy milk. If milk is an ingredient in a dish, it's ok, but not by itself. The second issue is a South Beach 140 calorie breakfast bar I ate. Both the milk and the protein bar gave me diarrhea, but no other dumping symptoms. If that's how my body reacts in dumping mode, then it's unpleasant but not the worst case scenario dumping syndrome.

I've been lucky from the day I came home that I've been able to enjoy our good weather and walk. I consistently walk between 1 to 1 1/2 hours per day plus ride my bike 20 to 30 minutes per day. I can tell how much the exercise is helping my recovery and weight loss and my energy level is higher than it's been in years. I look forward to adding some weight resistance training in a couple of weeks and am lucky that even though I'm retired, I can go back and use the gym facilities at my old employer.

Mrs. Wonderful is happy with how things are going and is very supportive. That's a huge help. Her eating patterns are so peculiar they don't conflict with my program at all, so that is good as well.

Well, that's the one month update. Boring I guess, but boy do I feel blessed. One month down, rest of my life to go.....

PS - Big shout out to Celadon (and One Tall ((Hot)) Mama) for getting me interested in cooking great tasting, healthy food. When I told my nutitionist what I had cooked for Valentine dinner, she just laughed and asked if she could come over for dinner. This is such a great neighborhood........... cool0012.gif

Oh Doug! I am so proud of you! You are doing everything EXACTLY as you are supposed to. I know how you feel about how supportive your wife is because my hubby is the same. He has never had a weight problem in his life and he eats so strangely! Have a great recovery! Rock on!

Awww Doug...the accomplishments you have made in one month are not small. Us losers know how hard some of those small steps are...and how exciting and scary some can be. It is great that you had the neighborhood to learn from before you had your surgery. It gave you that much more knowledge...which is always powerful. And I second the delicious recipes that we get here...second to none.

Here is to continued blessings for you in your journey...it truly has just begun!

And as you're discovering, it's not just about the weight loss...it's about TASTING food (imagine!) and having the energy to exercise and enjoy your life.
