Hi everyone,

THE 5DPT was a HIT !!!!! It was inspirational! Now I need your input....

Please send me your thoughts that I could share with others. We had many who came to ask for help to regain control after Kaye's speech. I'd like them to be able to hear from 5DPT veterans. I want to hear the easy, difficult, the thoughts and what you did or will try to do the next time. The Good, The Bad and the Not so good. I want honesty!

Remember, I respect your privacy. If you'd like to share with me but do not feel comfortable sharing beyond that, then please PM me. Otherwise, just add to this post.

Thanks everyone!!!!

MOUJ and any other Men Neighbors !!!I'd like your thoughts /feelings from the gentlemen who have used the 5DPT since I'd like to be able to share hope with the men attending conferences.

Hi Lynn,

I'm not exactly sure what thoughts to share with you (!) but I think being informed about the 5dpt beforehand is very important. Prepare all foods or at least have them on hand, before starting. It took all the "thinking" out of it for me that week and it made it easier. Keeping in mind that it is only 5 days helped too. I have found since I've finished it that eating protein for breakfast instead of carbs keeps me satisfied and not hungry before lunch. I was surprised! I used to almost always have a mid-morning snack of nuts, but not anymore! I also made up a "mission statement" for myself with my goals for those 5 days, my "menu" for each day and little reminders about drinking enough water and if I got frustrated that "this too shall pass". I referred to it a lot. It helps me to see things in writing.

I hope that helps you!

Hugs to ya!!

My thoughts follow the KISS philosophy (keep it simple silly).

1. Make the recipes before hand.

2. Read the 5dpt, write down the rules and don't ask questions. Follow the plan, including the ingredients to a T. It's only 5 days of your life. You can add "fluff" later on. Don't mess with it

3. Follow an eating schedule. Knowing when you're going to eat next can help to alleviate the head hunger & tendency to grab when we "need something now." For Example,

8:00 - coffee w/SF creamer
10:00 - protein drink
1:00 - protein drink
4:00 - SF pudding
6:00 - soup
8:30 - SF pudding

4. Remember - this IS NOT a diet. It's a tool to re-discover our pouches and banish the carb monster. Those are our ONLY 2 GOALS for the 5 days. Weight loss may or may not come. Don't count on it and you won't be upset (but you might be pleasantly surprised! cool0012.gif )

5. My only regret is not finding this sooner (i.e., right after my son was born). It would have saved me 4 years of frustration!

Hi!
I agree with Toris - Keep it Simple.
Also, I had all the shopping done and
was armed and ready.
I made the soups ahead of time.
Follow it to a "T"

I was easy for us. Just stay focused
and do outside activities (away from the food)

Keep a sports bottle with fluid handy... sip sip sip.

Exercise as much as you are able.

"K.I.S.S." Keep it simple sweetheart (I like Toris' "silly" - LOL)

**I wanted to add one thing. Stick around and post! Become a part of the Neighborhood.
Give back what you have learned. Surround yourself with those that are "in the game."
We can do this thing solo. Come on back - everyone needs refueling.

Hugs

Hey Lynn,
The 5DPT is the key but I don't think I could have done it
with a book or through reading an article. *I* need the
Neighborhood! *I* need to to feel I have someone there/here
to answer questions and give encouragement! So yes, the 5DPT is
phenomenal, but it is a PART of what is the magic of the total experience
here in the HOOD.

i agree with everyone else. shop ahead of time and have everything ready and planned out, (that way you are not tempted to grab something you aren't suppose to), stick to the plan , do each day as instructed, i have to say the first day was the hardest, then it wasn't so bac, and do other things to occupy your time so you don't think constantly about food, and stay out of the kitchen unless it's time to eat, it was a great thing for me, and it really worked, i also think the neighborhood has been key , i check in almost daily, its great therapy!!! nature-smiley-008.gif

The only thing I have to add right now, is a suggestion. I found that head hunger was my biggest issue. If it wasn't a meal time when I felt 'hungry', then I would make a protein shake. I figured that if it was real hunger, and not head hunger...then a protein shake would suffice and take care of the urge. If it was head hunger, then I found that by the time I walked to the kitchen and started getting supplies out, that the urge for something would have gone away, and sipping water worked just as well.

I'm only on day 2 but so far the most useful tool to me is to be accountable here in the hood. Post, sip, post, walk. Post, sip, post, protein. Post, sip, post...repeat. Keep checking in. Keep this a special time in your life.

I guess the only thing I want to add is this: Several people posted that they were hungry. I didn't battle hunger. The 5 dpt specifically said you could have all of the allowed food that you wanted. I took advantage of that. I did lose 8 pounds in the 5 days. If I was hungry on day 1 or 2 I had sf pudding or another protein drink. Now, I have found some amazing tasting protein drinks so this was not a hardship for me! On day 3 if I got hungry I had a soft boiled egg if it wasn't meal time. Honestly on day 4, I didn't get hungry as I had finished detoxing and my pouch was easily retrained. I made myself eat at the scheduled meal times and that was enough to hold me by the time I finished drinking all of my water around those meals. I was scared at first because I kept reading that people were so hungry, so I wondered if I was doing it wrong and we were supposed to be limiting the amounts of the allowed food so I reread the rules and we weren't! I feel amazing and have retrained my pouch to work for me. The feeling of putting solid protein in my pouch is just like it was after surgery!

Well, I'll be the pistol of the group...day two, mid-day, sucked for me! I got the shakes and was sure that I was losing some of my brain function. I knocked over a cup of coffee and couldn't get my body to react to clean it up. What was the fix for me? V-8, some tomato or butternut soup...veggie carbs. Once I incorporated those into my day, I was able to function again.

It's ALL GOOD!!!

I agree that asking questions etc...is PART OF SUPPORT!!! So ask away..just dont ASK ME! Lol.. Only cuz i'm only on day one for the very first time.....

I was on my 2 hour drive home...called Marla for the recipes (Hugs and thanks Marla! action-smiley-065.gif ) so that I could stop at the store BEFORE getting home...worked out perfectly!

Personally, I dont like to read and read and read and i'm too busy to always remember to carry the printout..so If I must ask questions I WILL!

I love all the input from neighbors and positive words of encouragement, accountability to others doing it at the same time...LOVE the weightloss numbers too!

Kim...You gotta do what you gotta do.....DONT WANT TO LOSE BRAIN FUNCTION! lol.. But you had V-8 and butternut soup...you didnt GRAB a bag of chips or lord knows what else you could have found at COSTCO! lol... Good job girlie!

Hugs to all..KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

Vivian- since I have never used A.S. I kind of don’t understand…. I just don’t eat pudding, jell-o, diet sodas, crystal light and Ice cream… But then again I can eat items with sugar…. but then again I have gain 50 pounds in the last few years but that was because of emotional eating which means that I’m eating high carb foods…I will say that my first three years I did not eat any white foods/carbs/desserts. I stuck to my protein and veggies. Then I moved to Paris and ate everything but lost weigh!!!! Cause the food in France is great and you walk everywhere…I think that giving up A.S. is just like giving up the sugar… up until three years ago I was not doing much sugar I was a vegan so I was not eating much of anything. I think it is best to eat foods that are whole and natural as can be…Drinking water is my big problem… Wish you the best

But if you do the 5 day pouch test without any of those artificial sweeteners, use a protein powder without artificial sweeteners,(I used V8-juice, chicken and veggie broth to mix my PP in. So I was not eating anything sweet excepts some grapes on the first day, because I was really weak. But that took care of my sweet addition). That should help with the sweet cravings.

I did the 5 DPT and I was one of those people who got hungry but I see that it was because I was only having PP with broth or V8-jucie no other items except some grapes. But I will tell you that on day three I was in touch with my pouch, ate eggs for Breakfast got full, ate fish for lunch got full ate pea soup for dinner got full, no snacking. Today is day 4 and still felling full……. I’m loving it

First can anyone tell me how to get my photo to automatically appear to the left of my post, not just when you click on my name?

Ok, I am 1/2 way though Day 5. I have done the Plan about 2/3 correctly, and cheated about 1/3, mostly at night, but I have lost 4 pounds and hope to lose one more pound today. THE PLAN WORKS (if you work it--is this a 12 step meeting??) I feel my pouch again--boy is that different-- and I am going to now employ "drier" foods to maximize this tool I have here. I am coming out of this thinking I either have a food allergy to wheat or sugar, because the insane cravings I have had have to be more than psychological (also my constant post nasal drip cleared up somewhat). Some thoughts:

1. Does anyone do this over and over--like every 6 weeks as a "pouch maintenance"? If so, do you lose more weight each time?
2. Next time I do it I will be better prepared. I will make the soups, for one, and not used can (They have sugar and of course salt) and have more things made up ahead of time.

What do you think?

BeJean
Marianne,
I can't help w/ the 5dpt questions, but I think I can help w/ the photo question. Go to "My Controls." Click on Edit Avatar Settings. Then upload the picture you want to appear as your Avatar. I think you have to click save when you are done to finish the process. If you still don't see it, try refreshing (F5 button will do it).

BeJean-you Technical Diva, you--it works. I am smiling at you as I speak. Thanks!

I am hoping to get some replies, too, from people who use the 5-Day as a "pouch maintenance" tool. Could work??

BeJean
And a nice smile it is!!! Glad to have helped!

The 5DPT was an eye opening experience for me.
Showed me the way I should have been eating since WLS!
But how are we to know? It all make SO much sense now.
That Protein comes first when we're hungry.
If I am truly hungry, I put the best possible fuel into my body
by turning to protein first. I hadn't a CLUE that I was choosing
the wrong foods when I'd eat crackers or pretzels mid-morning.
I thought,"These are baked foods, not fried, so they're OK!"
And didn't even really understand what "dumping" was before I
found my way here. So, everything has changed for me.
I have more energy, so I actually exercise...
I am almost never really hungry and I am back into losing mode
for the first time in 3 years. Hooray for the 5DPT and the life that
follows! It has changed everything for me!

Such a true comment, and it seems my experience after WLS is echoing yours, mickeefynn. After finishing the 5DPT on Friday, I feel more calm and in control. I am chosing to avoid carbs as much as I can and really thinking "is this neccessary" before having carbs or a treat--as in "must I really have this?" I would feel in control on diets but lose it after awhile (2 days!). The difference with the 5DPT for me is that I know I can do back and do it again if needed, and I will regain that "clean pouch" feeling. I think I may do it every 6 weeks. I really want to lose 25 more pounds and then get my lower body lift. Wish me luck!

For instance I had a chicken breast 9:30AM, not oatmeal/oatbran with milk and stevia or a mini bagel with protein, as usual. And I eat again at 1:00 but can't imagine I will be hungry then. My pouch feels so much smaller. I guess nothing "Physical" happened, but its all bio-chemical?
