Does anyone have some recipes for Protien shakes I can make ahead to take to work with me?? Most of the ones I have found are made with ice and are for drinking right away. I would like to be able to make some the night before and take them with me the next day. I don't have access to a blender at work or time to stop and make them. I am a nurse and things get pretty busy at times. cool-smiley-026.gif sign0031.gif Lola

Sorry Lola, I've got nothing here. I take a can of ready to drink, and then, I go find a cup of ice at work. I pour the drink over the ice a little at a time.

If you don't have access to ice, I'm not sure how to handle it. Maybe freeze a block of ice in a water bottle, then put the block of ice in a little cooler with your shakes? I'm not sure.

I find that I need to have a container of protein supplement powder with me wherever I go...
sitting with my granddaughter, work.. wherever. So I haul it with me or would keep it in my locker,
office, etc. If you get the high quality, finely milled powders (my fav is CytoSport Muscle Milk from
www.cheapvitamins.com $25 shipped for about 3lbs) they mix easily and don't have that grittiness to them.
They also only require adding water for a rich shake. I have several of these gadgets (see pic below)
I bought from QVC a while ago. I just looked and they're on CLEARANCE! $14.93 for the set of 4
Item # K1531
Tornado Mixer Set of 4 Portable Hand Held Mixers
These are like tumblers with a little whirligig in the bottom
that saves you looking for a spoon... no... it will NOT do ice!
But I like mine ... makes for a quick mix with cold water from
a drinking fountain.

bump/ check out the little blending tumblers one or two posts down...

Sorry if someone answered this on another post, but I am wondering if anyone knows a good protein powder that is unsweetened? I'd like to use vanilla and I'd like it to mix up real smooth.

Any suggestions?

good morning -

I had my RNY back in Sept 2005 - there are very few proteins that I can tolerate the taste of - altho they have definitely gotten better over the last 2 1/2 years - I swear by UNJURY - I like both the vanilla and chocolate - I'm not fond of the unflavored and can't stomach the strawberry sorbet - it is not completely sugar free but has very low sugar content! I add a scoop of vanilla to my morning coffee and I'm good to go - I also buy the Davinci sugar free syrups to add some flavor - I will buy the bagged frozen fruit and toss that in instead of ice for a smoothy - there are so many options for drinking protein shakes....I am not fond of the "ready made" "store bought" shakes in cans, I find that I tend to dump when I drink them...

Here is their web site
http://www.unjury.com/
I haven't tried it yet but I might..
I use REAL MEALS from Integrity Resourses..they have a Bariatric shop..They are in the process of revamping it so you can't order right away...It's fantastic...You add a scoop to 6 oz. water & I use a shaker for about 30 seconds...no geit, no soy aftertaste...like chocolate milk..They also have vanilla & strawberry...They come in packets with 2 servings in each & 1 serving has 30 gms of protien! It mixes easily & very quickly..I just make sure I have nice cold water...I can hardly wait to get some more! I will find the web site for you...I also use Their vitamins...I'll get back to you

there are a lot of different sites and opinions on soy vs whey - I personally can not tolerate the taste of the soy protein -

I found this site for you and it may help - good luck! cool0012.gif

I buy all my protein powder from Unjury and it's great. I don't recommend the chicken broth...but the chocolate and vanilla are delicious.

One of my very favorite shakes is called Jay Robb's and I like the Strawberry flavor (not fake strawberry; all natural and sweetened with Stevia instead of sucralose or aspartame)...I add about 3-4 Strawberries 1/4-1/2c Greek yogurt (has about 22g protein per cup) and either water or milk or sometimes Naked brand RTD protein drink (just enough to have about 8-12oz of shake)...The Greek yogurt makes it VERY rich, thick and creamy..and might I add YUMMERS...also I like a Mocha Cappuccino type shake that I use Bolthouse Farms Mocha Cappuccino PERFECTLY PROTEIN RTD(about 1/2c) plus 1/4c cold coffee, 1/4c milk(you could us water if you wanted to do so) and 1 scoop Body Fortress Chocolate protein..(about 33-35g protein per 8oz serving)... both of these could be made the night before and refrigerated and then drink when you want to...I have done it several times with the Choc/Cappuccino 1...very yummers!

The main difference I have found between Whey protein vs. Soy protein is TASTE...I totally like the "taste" of whey better than soy...the soy protein tends to be more gritty and leaves an aftertaste...for me...I guess you have to try them out and judge for yourself. If you have access to The Vitamin Shoppe or GNC you can buy "sample" pkts of some of the different brands and flavors of protein powders that way you do not invest in an entire 3lb tub of something you absolutely hate...that would be my suggestion. I also like the Designer Whey brand they also make a protein powder that is totally mixable with just a bottle of water...my favorite flavor in it is the Orange/Mango....(60 cal, 10g protein per pkt) go to www.designerwhey.com to get a coupon for a free sample of 1 of these fruity/mix with bottled water pkts... hope this is helpful.

Blessings!

I was told, (I think it was by the dietician) when I had my surgery almost five years ago, that:

1) we cannot absorb more than 30 grams of protein, at one time, and

2) when we mix the protein powders, they should be used within 30 minutes, or they lose much of what they are good for(protein-wise). I used to make mine ahead of time, and put it in the freezer, until I heard this.

Has anyone else ever heard this? And has this changed in the last five years?

I actually enjoy the chicken flavor sometimes. I love the strawberry! As a meal replacement I do it in 1 c. skim milk (you could use soy milk), add a few frozen strawberries, a little sugar substitute & some ice. Blend it into a milk shake. Yum. I agree about the chocolate & vanilla. The site is unjury.com
You might want to check out: bariatricadvantage.com. You can get samples of proteins at both of these sites. Nectar comes highly endorsed by some of the neighbors.
Hope this helps.
