Ok, so far so good, the first 2 days were easier than I thought, I'm almost scared to eat for fear that will "trigger" something.
My question is: I notice tuna, chicken, turkey, salmon, eggs, is there anything else? Can we still eat the pumpkin soups? How about the sugar free jello? The protein drinks? I think I'm real confused about what exactly we are to eat. Are we ONLY to eat the soft protein and nothing else?
Help please
Thanks love0028.gif

Anybody? Ok, I'm feeling a bit alone here, but did some reading, which takes alot of time. I'm going with ....yes, you can still eat the same items as the day before, but stick with the soft proteins for meal times...soo...here is what I have eaten today.
B-1 egg with canadian bacon & 1 slice swiss cheese
Snack-1 achieve One
L- 1 pouch lemon pepper tuna with chopped pickle
Snack- 1/4 cup protein pudding
Have also had 3 cups coffee and 16oz Chrystal lite.
Hmmm...I hope this is going the way it is suppose to...I feel very tired and have a major headach, but nothing tylenol can't seem to fix.
toris
On days 3,4 & 5, stick with solid protein - no fluff (for breakfast, you probably would have been better to have 2 eggs instead of adding the cheese & canadian bacon). You can add that stuff back in on day 6. (all in all, it's not a deal breaker so I wouldn't worry about it).

For snacks - SF pudding (protein pudding is fine) or SF jello. I'm not sure what achive one is (protein drink?).

Days 3-5 help us to get away from the "grazing" cycle. If you're eating your 4 oz of protein in one sitting for your meals, you shouldn't really have room for fluff. If you're following the rule of no drinking 1/2 hour before and after AND are trying to get in your 64 oz of water, you're not going to have time or room to snack much.

For the headache, try to eat 1/2 apple. It sounds like your blood sugar might be low. The apple should take care of it.

Most importantly - KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!! cool0012.gif cool0012.gif cool0012.gif

Hurray for you, Liem, you're doing great. It does get a little confusing; I have to keep remembering to tell myself "keep it simple."

I had the pleasure of speaking with Kaye, and she said that we can eat foods on subsequent days we've had previously, i.e., a shake or black bean soup on day 3 onward, but NOT to eat anything on the day BEFORE we're supposed to have it, i.e., no baked chicken on day 3.

I'm on day 4--we can do this!!!!!!!!!!!!! cool0012.gif

Thank you so much for the information, it really helps to have that extra person there helping you along the way. I usually do have 2 eggs, which I probably should have done, I added the "fluff" because I noticed she had a day 3 recipe that included turkey bacon and swiss cheese so that it would be o.k. The Achieve One is a protein drink that I buy from bariatriceating.com ...it is AMAZINGILY DELICIOUS!! Pretty much the only protein I drink. I have followed the rule of no drinking 30 min. before/during/after...this is acutally the hardest part to follow...I know I should be doing this all along, but it was actually easier on days 1&2 because I drink, drink, drink all the time....BAD ME!!
Any other suggestions besides and apple? I am not a fruit eater.
Thank you so much for your support, I really appreciate it.

Yea! How are you doing? It is nice to chat with someone who is around the same day, eating the same foods...I haven't even looked at day 4, I should go see what's in store. Good luck to you too and for the information...
WE CAN DO THIS!!!

day 3 recipe that included turkey bacon and swiss cheese so that it would be o.k.

As you'll see, I'm a little hard core about the 5dpt. (hush all of you out there! LOL!) If you want to have variety (who doesn't?), follow the recipes as they are written and try not to stray from the program. The recipes have all been worked out - and the numbers have been figured out so that you get the optimum results. As i said though, it probably wasn't even a big/small enough "blunder" to make any difference whatsoever - so don't worry about it.

Good luck on Day 4! It was actually my favorite day - what's better than a lightly seasoned juicy hamburger patty? Yumm-o!

I'm doing pretty o.k; I've had a HORRIBLE week at work and a showdown w/my boss tomorrow, but surprisingly enough, the food's been good. I'm amazed! I've lost 3 lbs. as of this morning (I know that's not supposed to matter....oh well.

To me today's food was the most blech...lunch was a turkey burger & dinner's a hamburger (broiling away as we speak) I had a protein shake this afternoon and an egg w/tuna pattie for breakfast. Burgers, burgers everywhere. I know we can have more than just burgers, it's just the way my food came out. Tomorrow's chicken and steak--I can't wait!

Have a great night.

Toris, I appreciate your input, I'm going to try to do better, skip the fluff=less fluff on me?? I'll go with that. I had fish tonight with lemon, I couldn't get over how full I was after just 1 serving..WOW, maybe my pouch does still work, I know I have to get back into the NO drinking with meals. It all makes sense to me now.

Karen,
Wow, you are doing well with a 3 lb. loss....I haven't lost a darn thing...what's up with that. I felt like I was starving on days 1&2 and nothing lost? Oh, well, I'm glad to be feeling a full pouch again. I haven't read what's to eat for day 4 yet, so I better head over.
Good luck to you on day 5

Hi Lisa!! action-smiley-065.gif

I'm on Day 4 so i'm right behind ya! I hear ya about being confused etc....and personally, I wouldnt call bacon and cheese FLUFF! But that is MY opinion. I made the bacon/cheese egg bake last night....it was pretty good and easy to grab when and if the hunger strikes you!

Keep up the good work! My ONLY suggestion to you was what Toris already mentioned...64 OUNCES OF WATER!! You only had 16oz...not enough! Might be why you havent lost any weight (even though its NOT suppose to be about losing weight...most ppl look forward to that part!) lol..

Try getting ALL that water in the next few days...I BETCHA you'll see the scale move by Saturday!

GOOD LUCK! Julie =)

Julie, thank you so much for the support! Say, where did you find an egg bake recipe, I must have missed that. I am horrible at trying to get my needed water in. I am not one for set eating times so when I think about a 1/2 hr. before and after and not during. I have to think ahead about when I'm going to eat.I also drink usually all day long. So have to remember not to drink coffee right away in the morning if I want to eat. Changing the mind set, that's what it takes.
By the way, I LOVE that blue dress you have on....You look gorgeous!!

Hello, this is my first post. I am on Day 3. Day 1 & 2 seemed easy for me. Protein shakes, (Champion Whey Stack Chocolate with 4-6 oz water and ice. Champion Choco seems to be a favorite in our area. Taste like chocolate milk and isn't thick) We are told by our doctor no sugar no milk so it is usually water, crystal lite, and Mocha Mix if you eat cereal (Fiber One in the strand looking form. No sugar and high fiber.) Sorry, rambling. I drank the shakes, water, crystal lite (aka Walmart Generic brand - they have an Apple that is to die for!) broth from the Ethnic isle - Mexican - Tomato Chicken flavor, and a bite here and there of canned grapefruit for the carb withdrawl. I found that I didn't even have cravings for food at all. Only when I started thinking about the shopping list for Day 3-5 did the thoughts of cheating come back. I was a huge grazer. This morning so far I have had a chicken salad with a tablespoon of Miracle Whip, chopped pickles, chopped boiled egg, and a can of chicken. Mixed just enough so it is still chucky. Just a little of the Miracle Whip to help it stick together and give it a little moisture. Ate very little. I can't give myself the leeway to eat a cup until I get my mind retrained again. Only complaint is a headache both days. But may not be from 5dpt. May be from work. Excederine seems to be the only thing that works for my headaches. I also drank an Emergen-C both day (pink lemonade super yummy) Helped. I also had one cup of coffee and all my vits and meds. Haven't been tired any more than normal and still seemed to have enough energy.

Is there anytime we can eat any veggies or fruit during the 5DPT?

Thank you to everyone!!! Going to make the pea soup today.

Oh one more thing. Vitamin C aids with the constipation.

Hi Tracy,

It sounds like you're doing great. Congrats!

No fruit or veges if you can help it! It is only a
couple more days!

You can do it!!!! party0002.gif

Hi Tracy. I think you're doing great too!

Just want to make sure you know that Excedrin contains asprin; sometimes people aren't aware of that. (not trying to be a know-it-all; my husband's not supposed to take asprin & he thought Excedrin was o.k!)

Just checking in to see how Liem and Tracy did with the 5DPT? Any updates?

Also - you can include low-glycemic fruits in the 5 Day Pouch Test. These will help control blood sugar and reduce carb cravings. Low glycemic fruit includes apples, oranges/citrus, berries, cantaloupe. Veggies: celery, peppers, lettuce.

Best wishes!

Doing good so far. I felt like I was doing better on Days 1 & 2. Didn't think about food at all. Was very easy to stay on broth, protein, water, and vitamins. Didn't realize that I could have SF pudding until night of day 2. (which was perfectly ok not having any) Once I was able to start thinking about what foods to eat my mind just started reeling and craving anything. Today, Day 3, I have had very tender pot roast, chicken salad, and tuna salad. I did get in a lot of water, protein, broth, vitamins. (The chicken salad was made with a little Miracle Whip, boiled eggs, pickles. Then the same but with Tuna. Both good and satisfying.) Have yet to actually be hungry. I haven't felt physically hungry in I don't know how long. Feel like I am failing my tool. I have to take it one moment at a time and argue with myself on whether I really need it or just want it or is it going to fuel my body.

How often can Day 1 & 2 be done safely? 2 days out of the week? Once a month?

Thank you for your support!!!
Tracy
Jules
Good morning Tracy!

You are doing great!

Isn't that head hunger ridiculous? Once you "know" you can eat you just cant help but think obsessively about food? That's what I did anyway. I kept reminding myself I wasn't "really" hungry.....Days 1 & 2 were the easiest for me also. The other 3 were fine, and it is only 5 days, but day 3 was the hardest for me. Along with being more aware of my pouch due to the 5dpt, I also am more aware of the head hunger and tell myself often, when I think I'm hungry, to wait, drink some water and see if it is "real" or in my head. A lot of the time, it's in my head!!! I just love to eat, like most of us here I think! So just know you're not alone, I argue with myself on a regular basis.

I think you can do an all liquid day safely, I'm no expert, but I'd say if you wanted to, once a week would be fine. I thought about doing it one day every 2 weeks, but of course I haven't incorporated that into my life yet. I'm still "thinking" about it apparently!!!

And about the Excedrin issue, I use Excedrin Tension Headache, it is just acetaminophen with a little caffeine, no aspirin, and it gets rid of my headache every time. I only use that or Tylenol, I never use any of the others; Motrin, Advil, Aspirin etc.....not good for us WLS patients.

I hope your days 4 & 5 go well for you!
karen2
Hi Jules,

Thanks for the update on the Excedrin Tension headache--I'll have to try it! I used to love the regular Excedrin. (Day 3 was the hardest for me too--I thought it was odd--never thought of the head-hunger aspect. )

Take care,

Jules
Hi Karen!!!

You'll love that Excedrin, it gets rid of headaches so quickly!!!!

Ok, the 5 days are over. Felt like I did better on 1 & 2. They felt mentally easier. Starting some foods on day 3 sent my head into a tailspin. But I do feel like I am "feeling" my pouch more. Before this I was never ever hungry and could get tooo much in. So I am going back to the basics. I will probably do the Day 1 & 2 again on Mon & Tues to get in touch with the pouch again until it feels like it has shrunk back to "normal"

Food question: I make a soup that I call Lime Chili. It is very tangy with lime and a hint of chili background. I only use beans in most of the time but have added ground turkey or chicken to it before. I use cannelli beans, garbonzo, and white homeny. Does this sound like an ok soup for the 5DPT? Since surgery I have craved more spicy flavors than before. This soup hits the spot.

Have a good weekend!
Tracy
toris
Tracy, there's really no reason to do the 5dpt again if you've banished the carb monster and can feel your pouch. Day 1 & 2 doesn't shrink your pouch (it's already small - we just get used to eating sliders so we forget what it feels like to be full). Days 3-5 is what helps you feel it because you're eating solid protein and nothing else. Liquids won't do that.

My advice would be to just stick on "day 6" (basically day 5 with complex carbs added in the form of low GCI veggies & fruits). You'll still lose weight and will feel your pouch much more than if you went back to days 1 &2.

That being said, your chili sounds YUMMY! I would leave out the hominy (which is basically puffy corn) to lower the carbs, but that's just me! YUMMO! Sounds perfect for day 6! Can you post the recipe?

Here is the recipe for the Lime Chili:

32oz of chicken broth
1/2 - 1 tsp of True Lime (in the Splenda section of the grocery store. They also make in lemon)
dash chili pepper
dash of cayenne
1 tsp Chipotle Tabassco
dash garlic
1 tsp dried onions
add your favorite beans (I use some hominy, cannelli beans & garbonzo beans. All the canned variety)
You can also add ground chicken or turkey

All the ingredients are to your taste. If you like it more sour like I do, add more lime. Hotter, add more cayenne pepper. This is so satisfying. I make up a batch and stick it in the fridge. I usually use about 1/2 a can each of the beans and put the other half in the fridge for later.

Enjoy!

Tracy
