Full Version: Day Five Panic
LAWLS Neighborhood > The Town Square: LivingAfterWLS Knowledge Center > WLS Chat > 5 Day Pouch Test
MollyS
Hi...another 5DPT newbie here. This being my first time trying the test I've probably made mistakes but stuck with it. The hunger was easily controlled with protein shakes the first two days, no problem. The worst was the headache. It lasted (despite fruit, Emergen-C, tylenol, ice packs, etc.) till the end of day three. Today was day four and finally I felt better and enjoyed feeling my pouch again at last. I love the sense of accomplishment at knowing I'm finally getting some results from this and like the fact that it is getting easier to resist carb urges.

But now...the big scare for me is day five because I haven't been able to eat chicken or steak since my first wls in 1999. (I had RNY revision from VBG 14 months ago.) No matter how well I chew those meats they get so painfully stuck and then I end up trying to vomit it out for hours on end. The only way chicken works for me is to add a few tablespoons of fat free ranch dressing which of course turns it into a slider. sad0017.gif

Luckily day five is going to fall on a Saturday so I will be at home to throw up all day. Sigh... Any ideas for getting through this and not resorting to creating a slider? The day five recipes do have some slight sauce-age but just don't sound appealing at all. Here I thought I was doing so well finally conquering my chicken problem with ff ranch dressing and now I'm doubting.

Thank you!

Molly

Don't eat something that makes you throw up. That's not a part of the test! Eat a solid protein that DOES work for you, ok? If that's tofu, or veggie burger patty, so be it. Try to keep it as dry and solid as possible, but don't do something that makes you ill. It's just not worth it. What solid protein HAVE you been eating all this time? Pork, shrimp, halibut, salmon. These all work.

best wishes, and don't panic!

I agree with Sandi. Don't eat something that will make you vomit. That would not be good. Eat solid protein that works for you? What can you eat that is solid protein? I find fish to be very easy to digest. Good luck to you

I agree, the point of the test is not to make you sick, but to help you feel your pouch. IMO, if day 5 stuff makes you barf, it's o.k. to stick with day 4 stuff.

To be honest, most of my "Day 6" protein tends to fall into Day 4 category anyway and I still feel my pouch.

Congrats on making it through! cool0012.gif

I know just how you feel! Day 5 proteins tend to not work for me. I did the 5 dpt 2 weeks ago. I did eat chicken and walked around all day drowning in spit and mucus. sick0022.gif My support group came up with a unique name for that pre-puking stuff- "cat spit". I was miserable, it hurt! I decided, since I am not a big fan of fishy fishes, that I would stick with the day 4 stuff. It worked pretty good for me. ( Sometimes even day 4 stuff doesn't work)

I do have to be very careful because my pouch does like to reject those good protein foods. It is easy to slip into the slider foods again because they don't hurt to eat. Take care of yourself. Again, I don't know if what I did was legal, so I don't know if you should do what I did, but for me, it was better than drowning in "cat spit."

Thank you so much!!!

Literally, the only way I've made chicken work this past 14 months since revision surgery is to add a low-cal sauce to it and to be sure not to overdo it. (No roast, steak, un-chopped red meats whatsoever!) I wanted to follow the rules 'as written' but was so scared. Day Four ground meats were so successful for me...I was finally able to eat turkey meatballs without THEM getting stuck and really felt that wonderful pouch sensation. Even white-meat fishes have to have salsa or something on them...meat just hasn't been my friend for the last 9 years but with my revision surgery I have become DETERMINED to conquer it one way or another.

So far today I've had my nf, sf soy latte (not on plan but I don't want to go cold-turkey on the caffiene so I've started each day with that) and was waiting for my computer to defrag so I could find out what everybody had to say for meat ideas.

Turkey meatballs, here we come baby!

HUGS!!!!

Molly
(Oh, and as a nice bonus I am down 8# these five days...woot woot!)

Cat Spit! That is so funny...may I steal that? LOL!

Thank you so much for your and everybody's help. The VBG surgery wasn't right for me because I was such a sweets eater (and many other reasons like no support group or aftercare) and when meats were no longer a comfortable food I just ate soft sweets until my weight was nearly all gained back. The RNY is working for me to control the real sugars but those whole-grain and sugar-free carbs have been callin' my name too much lately and the 5DPT has really helped me get it under control. What used to be slider foods for me were of course sweets, but also mashed potatoes, rich cream soups etc. Those are forever out of my life now and I really panic when I think of turning good-for-you foods like chicken into sliders. A little fear is a good thing for me! <G>

Here's to a NO CAT SPIT Day Five!

Make sure you breathe! That is important too! Hugs!

Make sure your food is well moistened, you should be able to handle it.

Thank you, Nancy. Day Five has ended well! Today I ate ground turkey sausage patties and then a slice of meat-crust 'pizza' which is just ground meat squished flat with a little pizza sauce on top and cheese. Just couldn't stomach any more plain, plain meat. Where one slice used to go down and be followed by veggies, tonight it didn't even get finished. Yeah! So thankful that this plan is out here for a good routine shake-up and that there are so many people willing to offer support.

Molly (looking forward to cottage cheese pancakes for breakfast tomorrow!)

Here's a link to the meat crust pizza recipe. I'm sorry I didn't get back here sooner to post it, please forgive me. I suppose this should more properly go in the recipes forum but I don't know how to cross post here yet.

My recipe for cottage cheese pancakes is a bit different than others you find online since I'm trying to reduce my fat intake and avoid white flours. Still turns out yummy and satisfies me tho.

In a blender or Magic Bullet combine:
1/4 cup nonfat cottage cheese
1/4 cup egg beaters or similar egg substitute
1 tablespoon brown rice flour
1 tablespoon oat flour
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/8 cup splenda granular
1/8 tsp. cinnamon

Whiz is all together till very smooth, cook just like regular pancakes in a nonstick pan sprayed with release spray. I top mine with 1/4 cup sf maple syrup or 2 tablespoons of a sf ice cream topping like blueberry, raspberry or strawberry. (Polaner is my fav. brand)

Hope it helps!

VBG is vertical banded gastroplasty...most commonly known as stomach stapling. Used to be the most standard form of wls until the rny was perfected. Has a rather high failure rate for many reasons. The reason mine failed was that it was not a good match to my style of food abuse and instead of helping my health, the regain I got with it only damaged my health further. Because of suga issues, I didn't want to revise this surgery to a DS (duodenal switch)...I wanted the dumping so often connected with RNY surgery. It is working very well for me personally and I am determined not to fail this surgery.

Doing the 5DPT was a great help to getting my motivation back, hope it is working for you too!
