Hi, I am new to this board and I am going to try this test. It sounds great and I am 3 yrs post op and I still haven't reached goal due to them pesky snacks I am trying so hard to give up. My question is what is a good protein to try. In 3 years I Have never taken protein supplements because I have never been able to drink them. Thnakfully I can eat enough to stay healthy. Another thing I was wondering about is what do the other posters mean by day 6? I though it was just 5 days. Any replies would be gladly appreciated. Thanks so much.

Hi Halaina,

I believe day 6-forever is just like day 5. Its an ongoing activity.

I'm sure the experts will be in later and can confirm or correct this.

action-smiley-065.gif Hi,

I am 7+ post Op (Lap RnY) . I have drank a few different protein drinks through the years. Some good - some NOT. I have found one at GNC pre-made that is good. Also I was using Jay Robb Whey Protein Powder. I though I would take the suggestion of another member to try the Muscle Light Powder - UGH. I have a tough time with finishing the whole drink - even though I've tried adding Bolthouse protein juice to it for flavor. I think I'll return it and stay with Jay Robb. His drinks are so smooth and they are flavorful. Plus I still us the Ready to drink stuff for the days I work.

I use Unjury protein powders & am happy w/ them. You can purchase samples at the website: unjury.com.
Also, Julie (I think it was she) said you can get a lot of different samples at vitalady.com. I went & checked & they do have a bunch.
Fuzzy is right, day 6 is the food plan you will stay on after doing the 5dpt.
Best wishes as you attempt to take off the rest of thos pesky pounds![/i]

Hi Halaina,

sign0016.gif

I use Designer Whey protein powder, chocolate. I mix it with nonfat milk and some coffee and I love it!!!

I did the 5dpt a few weeks ago and I found a new awareness of my pouch. I try and "listen" to it now. And it taught me that if I eat protein for breakfast (I've been having one hard boiled egg) I can make it to lunch with no snacks. And I've added the protein shake to my afternoon and that will get me through to dinner.

My best advice is to be prepared for the 5dpt, have the food there and have a "plan" for what you'll eat on days 3-5. I had a few choices too, in case I was bored. And keep drinking your water!

Good luck to you!

Day 6 and beyond is Day 5 with added complex carbs such as low carb veggies and fruit.

Here's the link to Day 6:

http://www.livingafterwls.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=3969

It's a whole thread so you may want to go read it, but here was Kaye's initial post:

What happens after the 5 days? (we now call this Day 6)

After the 5 Day Pouch Test is when things get exciting. Having successfully broken a carb-cycle, regained a feeling of control over the surgical gastric pouch and possibly losing a few pounds one is ready for re-entry into a compliant way of eating. This means focusing on protein rich meals, observing the liquid restrictions and avoiding starches, particularly processed carbohydrates and slider foods. Three meals a day should be two-thirds protein, one third healthy carbohydrate in the form of low-glycemic vegetables and fruits. Consumption of whole grains is not forbidden, but should be limited to one serving a day.

If necessary between meal snacks should be protein dense. Natural food protein is great including hard-cooked eggs, lean low-sodium deli meats, and limited servings of nuts or low-fat cheese. In addition, protein bars or beverages may be used for between meal supplementation.

Patients should drink at least 64 ounces of water a day and take their prescribed supplemental vitamins. Caffeinated beverages should be limited to one or two a day and carbonated drinks are discouraged. Alcoholic beverages should be limited to one per day or less.

Patients should commit to this way of eating for their lifetime.

I used to run a support group for WLS patients and those thinking of WLS. One of the proteins that seem to be the favorite is Champion Pure Whey Stack in Chocolate. (I don't like any of the other flavors for daily drinking ) I use 1 1/2 scoops (included) which equals about 30 grams of protein. Mix it with about 4-6 oz of water then add a couple ice cubes to chill it. No milk equals less sugar and less calories. It taste like chocolate milk to me. It isn't thick at all. Unless you like it thick then you adjust the amount of water. I usually get mine from www.vitalady.com Very good prices as well as samples of many different proteins so you don't end up buying a huge jug that you don't like.
