How do you know if something is stuck or if there is something else going on. When does something stuck become something that you need to go to the doctor for.

I have been having stomach issues since yesterday after lunch. I had really intense pain immediately after eating dinner and some sharp pains even after drinking tea last night. I went to bed curled up in pain but was just thinking that it was intense gas pains because there was a lot of rummblings going on. I nibbled on my breakfast and got full a lot sooner than I have been getting lately but I attributed that to maybe finally getting past all the hunger pains. Well I went home and ate lunch and now I am almost double over in pain. It almost feels like gas pains but it is up higher closer to my stoma and I am a little bit nauseaus but since surgery can't throw up. It isn't high up enough to feel like heart burn. I just don't know what the next step would be. If I wasn't pregnant I would just go on liquids for a couple of days and give my stomach a break. Do you think that is an OK idea? I actually don't even know if my blood sugar would let me do that. I am going to try a protein shake around dinner and if I can get that down that might work for the next day or so. When is this something that I should be worried about. I have had broccoli stuck and it felt similar to this but I felt fine by the next morning.

Any ideas or suggestion would be help?

Ang,
I'm no help. My reaction is to call the doctor. You take care of yourself. Let us know when you find out what this is.
Sandi
Sounds like maybe an ulcer...Can you get in touch with your surgeon or doctor? It should be looked at.

Hi Ang,

I am so sorry to hear you are going through this. It sounds like what I had when I had my small bowel obstructed I have been in twice in the last year and had to have emergency surgery. It started out with periodic tummy aches that would come and go w/i about 20-30 minutes. the week of my obstruction I was feelingvery bloated, my pants were fitting differently and I had a difficult time eating. Nausea set in AFTER my attack. W/i 4 hours of being in the ER I was in the OR! You don't want to mess around with this. I suggest to call your MD Immediately. Especially since you are pregnant.
I pray for you that it is gas but please call your surgeon and let them know what's going on. In complete detail so you don't get pushed aside.

Prayers and blessings to you,
Angp77
Thank you guys for your inputs. The pain has subsided but I am not looking forward to my next meal at all. I am going to start keeping a really close journal of what's going on with my body over the next couple of hours just so I can really get a good idea of what exactly is going on. The fact that I didn't have pain with breakfast but had a full sensation quickly but then got it back with lunch is what is throwing me. I got liquids down fine all morning as well. I am stumped. Believe me I am one to be overly cautious and call the doctor quickly but I want to make sure I know what it is that I am complaining about before I call :) Off to write every BLT down and every twinge as well.

smooches xx

Call your surgeon's office!
They probably have a nurse on call . .

Best wishes to you!

Hi Ang,

I would not mess around with this, especially with knowing what Sonja went through. Better to be safe than sorry Sweetie. It can't hurt to just give the doc a call and get his/her opinion. All my experience with getting something stuck (that surprisingly just happened to me a week ago and hadn't in 3 years!) is you can't even get liquids down until you throw it up or it passes. Being that the pain is coming and going, I don't think you've got something stuck, but you never know. Hopefully it is just pregnancy gas!

You might feel better emotionally and physically if you hear a professional say "you're fine".

I hope you feel better SOON and I'm so sorry you're going through this.

Gentle hugs to you and the baby!
Celadon
Ang, hugs to you and the babe. Call the doc. Be sure.

Ang,

I'm sorry you aren't feeling well. However, it doesn't sound like you have something stuck. It does sound like you may have some kind of blockage though. I see this quite often at work. You should call your doctor's office and let them know what is going on. You have the bigger worry of being pregnant as well. You want to be safe rather than sorry. I pray that this resolves quickly. Hugs.

I am good right now. I think I may have caused myself to dump while trying out too much food but I wanted to make it happen again. I have a feeling it may have been a nut from yesterday at lunch. I have been able to get down crackers, pudding, ground beef and a few other things with absolutely no pains. I have just never had something follow me into the next day like that. If I have any more pains I promise yall and Les is ALL over me as well I will call the doctor as soon as it happens.

Hi there, I had something like that about 9 months past surgery..I was doubled over in pain and it did feel like gas but I ended up in the emergency room..The did a cat scan and found out I was constipated and becasue I felt so bad I didn't get my water in and I was also very dehydrated..Don't know if this will help but that was my experience..If in doubt go and check it out.Better safe that sorry..Will keep you in my prayers..kuulani

This sounds like me. The doctor called it gastritis. There is a certain kind of gastritis that post op gastric bypass patients can get, not sure of the name, but it happens when the spot where the "old pipes meet the new pipes" get inflamed/irritated/swollen. Usually it just needs tylenol, and a very soft or liquid diet for a couple days to let it heal. I am on Prevacid to help prevent it since I have gotten it multiple times. Tomatoes seem to be a big trigger for me.

This is all very interesting to me. Not just because I'm concerned for YOU sweets, but because I was having similar pain. You see, I made that soup that Celadon posted...Edith's Minestrone. It had ground beef (which I normally don't eat), barley, veggies and melted lowfat Velveeta. The numbers looked to be fine for me, but after a bowl of it yesterday at lunch (along with some sliced turkey and two snap peas), I was in the same pain that you described. When I took a gulp of water, I felt it hit my pouch and I cramped up just awful. It was like the soup had balled up in my gut and wasn't allowing anything to pass though. I woke this morning with a very sore tummy and a weird poopy (just glad to have gone at all). I had some scrambled egg and took it easy. Well, being INSANE like I am, I tested out the soup again at lunch today, eating only half as much. PAIN!!! Not as much, but let me tell you...I'm not eating any more of it!

So this gastritis thing has me curious, the bowel obstruction has me curious, your pain has me curious...I'm just a whole lot of curious and am dropping weight like crazy since I don't want to eat anything other than scrambled eggs!!!
Angp77
Well I wouldn't wish my pain on anyone that is for sure. Today was a good day. I made myself eat my normal diet only because i didn't want to mask anything that could be going on. Things are a bit tender and I am getting fuller a bit faster but no more stabbing pains. Gas is less today. I am having no problems with liquids so I am going to call it good. I hope it passes for you quickly as well Kim!

Hugs!
Ang
