Hi Everyone.
Well today its the end of week one. Still sore and getting some strange sounds from deep inside me. On liquids still and doing ok. One question how much weight are you expected to loose in the first few weeks. I went in at 124.4 and weighed myself today one week to the day and I am now 118.7 is that about right. I know I am asking a silly question but just want make sure I am not going wrong some where I called the hospital and they told me I should have lost between 10 and 15 lbs. Maybe my pouch is not working right?
Very confused here
Cindi
Your weight loss will be your own...don't follow anyone elses trends. Your body...your schedule. As long as you are following the four rules, you will be fine. Get that protein in, move your body, take your vitamins and drink your water.
Congrats and the gurgles are just your little pouchy settling into place!

Hey Cindi! I'm also one week out and have been wondering what my body is going to decide to drop off as well. Like Kim said, I think we're all going to do it differently.
One thing to keep in mind as well... I know my center told me they did not weigh us at the hospital specifically because the Gas from surgery adds weight. And sure enough, when I got home I weighted 4Lbs more than I started at!! Took me 4 days to get rid of that gas, but can take longer for others.
My approach is going to be... If I follow the rules: I'll hit the goals.
Good Luck!!
~Patti~
PS.. Aren't those gurgles weird?! First time I heard them I thought.. "Man a scary Movie Sound man should be recording these!"

Cindi,
Please don't do what I did and place all your energy and focus on how much weight you are losing and the amount others are losing. I let that very thing consume me in the beginning and it took my great friends here to make me see otherwise. Concentrate on doing what you need to do for you...getting in your liquids, protein and walking and the weight will come off. Just give your body time to figure out exactly what you've done to it. It's in a state of confusion.
Congrats and keep posting.

picolla, relax and follow the rules... your body's rate of loss is your own,
no one else's. This is a lifetime commitment, so there's no sense in
trying to hurry things along. We're in this for the long haul. Our food choices
and way of living is changed forever. So everyday, we become a bit
more settled into the routine, forming new, healthier habits; shedding the
unhealthy old ones. Even 5 yrs post-WLS, I have to recommit myself,
my energy, every new morning to the process of patient, positive change.
It will happen if we work an active, honest program.
Accept the gift and have a great new day!

Good answers here. And, know that you WILL hit a plateau. If you are worried about keeping up w/ others, that plateau will drive you nuts! Just follow the rules. The weight will come off.
@Terri: great new avatar. And you look good standing next to him, too! LOL

My surgeon told me a great thing that really helped me during the weight loss phase. He said that some people lose fast, some people lose more slowly, but at about 14 months, everyone ends up in about the same place. I've been watching and he's right!
So here's my advice:
* Do what you know you're supposed to do (follow "the rules") every day. No slip ups or holidays
* Only weigh yourself once a week until you reach goal.
* Measure your body with a tape measurer every month while getting to goal.
* Post often, and read even more than you post--but check in daily. Find a way to make yourself accountable.
* Record what you eat and how much you exercise on FitDay or CalKing or one of the great free online food journals.
* Don't allow discouragement to cloud your vision. Begin with the end in mind and don't worry about every step in between. You're getting there.
* Remember: you're not alone. So many of us went through what you're going through, and we all are here cheering you on.
best wishes for lasting success!

I agree with the replies above. I have watched some people lose quickly and some slowly, but we all lose and in the end, you will get where you want to be ONLY by following the rules and making it a lifetime commitment. Take the time now, when you don't have an appetite to focus on healing all of you, both mentally and physically. A good plan will get you there. Best wishes for a healthy ride!

Hi Cindi,
You have to remember you are only a week out! Give yourself time to get adjusted to the new you. You have done nothing "wrong". Weight loss is different for everyone and you will go through phases, sometimes you'll lose quicker than other times. Just know that you have changed yourself for the better, your future is MUCH brighter now and you will be so much healthier and happier. But it takes time. You will be surprised how fast the time will fly by, really. The beginning is hard, you need to be patient. Follow your doc's instructions but I know they are not the most informed bunch that I've ever heard of! Read everything here and ask questions and reach out for support. We'll be here to tell you what we think and to support you the best we can.
You will drive yourself crazy comparing yourself to others. Your body will do it your way, and as long as you follow the rules, as everyone here has told you, you'll do GREAT!!!!!
My only advice is to remember to sip, sip, sip, move around as much as you can and be kind and patient with yourself.
Hugs to you my friend!!!

What Terri said! Seriously, Cindi, the numbers don't matter today. Make sure you get your protein, your water, your exercise and your sleep. You are going to just fine --- don't worry about the numbers. It's all about getting recovered and getting healthy. You can do this!

HI Picolla!
Well, it sounds like you've gotten plenty of advice....and believe me...I KNOW about setting myself up to lose like everyone else!! When I didnt I was EXTREMELY DISCOURAGED!! That lasted a good solid year!! I didnt lose 100 lbs in 6 months like everyone else..in fact I lost 22lbs the first month which wasnt much compared to some!
However, I'm looking at your numbers and you didnt really only weigh 124.4 lbs in weight did ya? I know your system is different there and i'm thinking...that doctor needs to have his head examined to do wls on someone who weighs that little!
So do tell...what is the conversion into LBS for your starting weight..it kinda startled me!!
Thanks! Julie
And many hugs to get you through this trying time..I WILL all work out and you WILL be a success if you work it!!

Hi again Cindi,
I forgot to say this in my last reply to you, have you taken before pictures? I would if I were you. It really helps to look back on them, down the road, if you get discouraged by a plateau. Plus it is good to have them, to remind you where you once were.
And the gurgling and sounds your stomach is making? I am 5 years out and my stomach STILL makes the weirdest noises, almost every day. Sometimes it is embarrassing actually!!! But worth it!

I had to search the net to find a converter. Right here is the figures.
124.4 KG
19.6 Stones
274.3 Pounds.
I am shocked you say I am not big according to my Doctor I am way over the limit here. I think the problem with my diabetes also had a lot in regard to my having the surgery.
Hope this helps with the weight question

Hello Everyone
Well I am still here. Been a rough week with a lot of cramps and just not feeling like I should. But was told I need to rememebr I have other complications to consider. So a few tears here and there and I felt a bit better. Still on the liquids. But am a little fazed here. I drink well over 64fl oz in a day and am walking a fair bit. Yet I find I dont seem to feel that fullness I have heard you all talking about. I woke up thursday this week and with out thinking drank two full glasses of water. Then it hit me so I sat on the edge of the bath waiting for the full feeling and there was nothing? Have I got a pouch I asked myself. Maybe I have sprung a leak? Any ideas ladies? A little worried here.

Cindy,
You probably aren't going to feel full while you're on the liquids. Don't worry about it. Once your diet progresses to meats you will feel it.
Take care of yourself, follow the doc's orders, do a little walking as you feel up to it. Let your body heal.
Make sure you are sipping, and not gulping, those liquids...and not too much at once.
Jules

Hi Cindi,
Don't worry, you DO have a pouch and there are no leaks! It is normal to feel like something is "wrong", when it is not. This is all new to you so everything is a concern. Remember, everyone and every body is different. Let yours heal and don't push the limits as far as eating, to try and make yourself feel full. Please don't gulp your liquids, like Jean said, sip them. You WILL feel the fullness and you WILL succeed in this! We are all here to help you. Keep posting and asking questions, I hope we make you feel a bit better. And the whole weight thing confused a few of us here, it is hard to remember that you are using KGs when we're so used to seeing lbs!
This surgery was the best thing you could have done for yourself. You will feel better and better as your healing progresses.
I think about you and wonder how you're doing often! Keep us posted!
Hugs to you,

Hi Cindi,
I had my surgery three months ago and was starving for the first month. I thought something was wrong with my pouch! During the liquid phase, I never felt any fullness at all. But once I started eating protein, I realized that my pouch was working. I can't fit in more than 3-ounces at a time and I stay full for about four hours. Then I get hungry again, but not ravenous like I was before. Be patient...I promise, it does get much better once you move on to food. Hope this helps. --Kathy

If only it was so easy to break old habits. Where along the way did we learn to just chomp and swallow. I try and remind myself to sip slow and steady, even though my tea or coffee has gone ice cold. I went to town and sat watching people who walked around shopping and eating at the same time. They take these huge bits one or two good chews and down it goes all chased with a can of soda. I wonder if they will ever end up in my position. This is real hard its like learning to live all over again. One of the facts that you can never understand until you have had the operation.

Hi Cindy, Back at you, ok?
Remember the words to Lean on Me?
Sing along now people!
Lean on me, when you're not strong
And I'll be your strength, I'll help you carry on.
For it won't be long, til I'm going to need
Somebody to lean on.
As the kids say,
It's all good!

Hi Cindy,
I'm sorry you've had a rough week. I experienced nausea after my WLS for quite a while, it sucked but I still wouldn't change a thing!! Just try and get in enough water and rest, you're still barely out of surgery! It will get better and it will all be worth it!!! You are learning a lot of new things right now so be patient with yourself.
Hugs to you.

Hello Everyone
Happy Easter to you all in the Neighborhood.
Well I have to smile my tickler is moving down slow but sure. One more week of liquids and then on to a soft diet. I cant wait. I am so sick of soup and fluids. But on the good side I am walking a lot and manage up to 8 miles a day. My kids think I have gone nuts I will walk for any excuse now. Its not been easy and I have had some bad days. But when I hit those I come back here and read all the supporting comments left by you guys and just carry on.
The only major problem I have is a constant deep sort of ache on my right side just under my bust where they made an incision. It tends to be worse when I walk and can knock the wind right out of me. I see the Dr next week and will have it checked out and keep you posted.
But thank you all again for your words and support at this time. Its very much appreciated.

WOW.... 8 miles? You take care of yourself! You're right to tell your Dr. about the pain you're having. It sounds like you're doing great otherwise. I know you're looking forward to being on food again. I well remember my own experience. I didn't know an egg could taste that good!
Keep us posted!

Great job Cindi!!!!
Real proud of you!! I just joined this site about a wk ago and read your first post today. I just want to say that it took me awhile to start loosing wt. I gained over 15lbs after surgery. Mine was all fluid wt. But before I knew it I was down 35lbs then another 15 etc....I never wanted to eat because I was sooooo nausiated. Solid foods never came to my mouth until I was about 2 1/2 months out. I would start to fix supper for my family and my husband had to finish because all I would do is gag the whole time. Just the smell did me in.
Keep up the good work all will get better soon. Michele
