Hi Dee. I recall that I was eating pretty much everything that we're allowed to by 3 months. Heck I was eating steak at 2 months (carefully). Things don't sound right with your friend. She should ring her surgeons office.
Hope she's feeling better soon.

At three months, I was eating anything, but in very small portions (like a half cup over the course of a half hour). If she is eating slooooowwwwly and is still having issues, she should most certainly see her surgeon.

Hi Dee,
I'm 5 months post op. Haven't had any trouble with being sick but my first questions are is she eating small, less than a teaspoon size bites and waiting 2 minutes between bites (of course - chew, chew chew)
I have even bought a digital timer to make sure I waited.
As far as food choices I was on solid foods by 3 months and did use the fat free gravies with chicken, ground beef, even ham.
Don't know if these things help but I really hope your friend is okay. Has she called her doctor or dietician? I know the protein is critical right now but she may need to go back to soft foods to settle herself down.
One of the things I cherished while only on soft food was scrambled egg. It was tough keeping it warm with the 2 minute interval thing, but I literally put my bowl in a warm toaster oven between bites to keep the eggs warm!
Good luck!

She was eating everything before the last couple of weeks that seems to have changed. She was eating cheese tator tots and rice and brocoli soup. Salad, fried chicken, Her sergeon told her to eat pasta and she did for the 1st few weeks after surgery. Now she said milk makes her sick, tuna fish, chicken, meat in general. She lives off of crackers and cheese spray.

Wow Dee!
I think your friend is in trouble. Crackers, spray cheese & pasta, oh my! @ 3 months? Spray cheese? Really? I do not think there is anything nutritional in that! I'm so sorry she's doing badly and feeling sick but it sounds like she doesn't want to accept help or your suggestions. If she wanted to be informed she can come here to the site and inform herself! No matter where her computer is located....we all make choices, maybe she can set aside a 1/2 hour or so when her hubby watches the kids? I don't know. I bet you feel frustrated where she is concerned. She is starting this whole post WLS life with some bad habits. I think she needs to go back to bland, pureed food, until her pouch settles down. Give it a break. She should puree nutritional soups, homemade or canned minestrone would be good (no pasta) or chili (mild) and try different protein shakes to see what she likes or can tolerate. What about water? Is she drinking enough and waiting in between sips (drinking too fast has always made me feel bad, since WLS). Whatever she is eating that is upsetting her, she needs to stop eating that, and try it again later. I did not have pasta or rice for over a year, I think, and I still cannot tolerate brocolli. String cheese always settled well with my pouch but eggs did not, at first. I'm not sure what else to say, I'm sorry she's feeling sick but it sounds like her doctor has eating instructions that I've never heard of!!
Keep us posted as to how she is doing. I wish her the best.

Dee,
My best advice for your friend is to get back on the 3-4oz. protein with maybe an ounce of green beans if shes still hungry. That's what my group as had me on for over a year now. Is she taking all her vitamins and water?
Dee

She is taking a liquid vitamin, well now i thnk she moved on to pills. She doesnt drink much water that i see. maybe 2 (17oz) bottles at work. Not sure what she drinks once at home. She was sipping on diet coke.. shortly after she made it bk to work. I told her that wasnt recommended. It has been very frustrating wanting to help, knowing she is making bad choices that make it ruffer for her. Now she is asking me what to eat bc everything is making her sick. I will sugg she go bk to the basics and leave all the fried, solid meats alone for awhile. She will not drink protien shakes. she has always said they make her sick.

I was just sitting here looking at my doctor's dietary guidelines and saw your post. Here is what they said:
15 g carbs per day
400-600 calories a day
60-80 g AT least of protein daily
64 oz fluid minimum
This is done until a person reaches 75% of excess body weight loss; At 3 mos, a person should have lost 35% of their excess body weight. Has she lost 35% of her excess? If not, time to get back to basics.
I cannot believe she was advised to eat pasta, crackers. Here are some things my doc said:
Stage 4 - Solid diet Begins approximately by week 4. Lasts until you lose 75% of excess body weight. High protein low carb diet
*no snacking
*First 6 mos, avoid red meat (beef), pork, venison, veal and raw vegetables
*No pasta, rice, fruit, potatoes, or bread/bread products (crackers)
*Always eat 3 oz of protein first at every meal; if you have room, add 2 tblsp of a low carb vegetable, and lastly 2 tblsp of a moderate carb food.
The low carb vegs include: soft cooked fresh, frozen or canned such as carrots, beets, mushrooms, spinach, squash, green beans, asparagus, turnip greens. No vegs with tough skin or seeds (such as tomatoes, celery). Cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, and brussel sprouts may cause gas distress. No acidic vegs.
Moderate carb foods include: green peas, acorn squash, cream style corn. Skim nonfat milk. Low carb high protein yogurt such as carb masters or carb control. NO bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, or fruit until goal weight is rached. When and if pasta and rice introduced in diet, needs to be fully cooked. Coarse bran cereals and beans may cause gas distress. Tough skin on corn. NO sugar coated cereal, potatoes to which sugar has been added. No fruit juiced, fruit canned in syrup, dried fruits. No pineapple until 6 mos or longer. Melons and raw apples may cause gas distress. No yogurt sweetened with sugar, no milk higher than 1 1/2 % fat.
Soups: Broth only. This can always be used as a part of fluid between meals and is a free food. All other soups are discouraged. These are not a good protein source. NO CREAMED SOUPS.
Hope this helps. I only picked out the things I felt were most important.

HI Dee!
Well, it sounds first off that your friend needs professional help. Help to help her deal with issues and food. As we all know that if we dont change our thinking and eating habits..then wls will not be successful in the long run.
THIS is exactly why people seek PROFESSIONAL HELP!
You cant help her Dee...she MUST help herself!
Most importantly...she may have a STRICTURE and THAT she needs to see the doctor for!!
Please ENCOURAGE her to get help for that. At least they can rule out!!
Good luck and keep us posted! Julie

WOW SOUNDS LIKE YOUR FRIEND IS IN TROUBLE. FIRST AND FOREMOST SHE NEEDS TO SEE HER DOCTOR I TO THINK SHE MAY HAVE A STRICTURE. A SCOPE CAN EASILY DETECT THAT. IS SHE EATING TO FAST OR NOT CHEWING HER FOOD REALLY WELL. IM SHOCKED TO HEAR THE DIET ADVICE GIVEN BY HER DOCTOR. FRIED FOODS SO EARLY IM STILL AFRAID TO EAT THAT STUFF! SHE IS REALLY STARTING OFF ON THE WRONG FOOT BY THOSE EATING HABITS. NOBODY IS PERFECT AND EVERYONE SLIPS INTO BAD HABITS ONCE IN A WHILE BUT U PICK YOURSELF BACK UP AND START OVER. WHY IS SHE DRINKING DIET COKE? THE CARBINATION COULD CAUSE SOME PROBLEMS IN HER POUCH AS WELL. IF SHE CONTINUES MAKING EXCUSES FOR HERSELF BY JUSTIFYING HER EATING POORLY BECAUSE SHE GETS SICK TO HER STOMACHE SHE WILL NEVER SUCCEED AT LOOSING WEIGHT AND KEEPING IT OFF. REALLY GET HER TO HER SURGEONS OFFICE TO BE CHECKED AND TALK TO HER ABOUT HER EATING PATTERNS.
BEST OF LUCK WITH YOUR FRIEND WE R ROOTING FOR YA!!!

She is very upset with me stil today. She cant believe some of the things you all said! she feels like yall are attacking her. And didnt want yall to know what she has been eating and drinking. I told her w/o that info nobody can make realistic sugg. besides she asked me to come and post on her behalf here. Now she is angry and rejecting all of the advice. you would think since it is coming from multiple diff people she might would listen instead of defend herself.

Without knowing specifically the things that were said that upset her, there's not much to say except I'm sorry we invaded her space. I know she can't possibly be feeling well mentally or physically. It's hard to have a cheery outlook when your nauseated all the time.
I'm not clear about what she wants you to tell us on her behalf. I do know her relationship with food changed drastically after the surgery. I know mine did. Sometimes it made me feel trapped. I've used food as a coping skill most of my life. Suddenly, no food no coping skills. YIPES!!
We all experience different things at different times in our recovery. We're very individual. None of us has any answers really. Maybe the food changes we recommended will work and maybe they won't, but the important thing is she feels in charge of her own recovery. She has come such a long way to let nausea destroy her potential successes.
It would be so good if she could join our group, when she's ready. As far as, I'm concerned this site is here especially for people like her and me. Sometimes things that come up in recovery aren't covered by the rules. This community has such a wealth of experience there is almost always someone who can help.

She asked me to come to my wls site and ask yall what she should be eating at 3 mos out. She however did not want me to tell you anything about the way she has been eating.. the experementing she has been doing. She just wantd me to say she is 3mos out what should she eat. The details of her choices were not to be mentioned I guess.

Hi Dee. As we were discussing in chat yesterday "You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink" situation applies here.
May I suggest with love that you leave her to her own devices. She'll sink or swim and if she needs your help badly enough she might have the "guts" to ask and listen again.
Politely suggest to her that since she didn't like the post you submitted on her behalf that SHE DOES IT HERSELF!!! hehe
Good luck. Don't get caught up emotionally with this Dee. It might bring you down and, I'm sorry, but she doesn't sound like she's worth the sacrifice.

I think that we all are saying what she wants to know, just not saying it the way she needs to hear it. I do really hope that she'll make sure there is nothing medically wrong with her, like the stricture everyone is suggesting.

Hello Dee, I think your friend has a problem, as we know a lot of people get the WLS and think it will be the magic that they have always wanted, eat what they want and lose weigh. They do not understand that this is just a tool.....I feel for her, I had a friend who lost 250 pounds with the WLS and she gain back a 100 of it, because she never learned to use this as a tool, and she kept using food to fill her up.... YOU know what I've been doing for the last 3 years...... I am so lucky that it is just 50 pounds but it is 50 pounds too many....... Your friend needs help from her Doctor and a support group!
